This Turkey Over Italy Turkey Sandwich on Foccacia Bread is just the best. This sandwich is made with our yummy homemade focaccia bread, deli turkey, provolone cheese, pepperoncinis, vinegar drenched lettuce, and pesto mayo. They make this delicious baby at my favorite sandwich place in Boise called Deli George. If you are ever in the Boise area, I highly recommend the Deli George. Their sandwiches are amazing! I have been wanting to re-create this sandwich ever since I first tasted it, and I have to admit, my version tasted just like it.

Ingredients in Our Turkey Over Italy Sandwich

  • Focaccia Bread – I like using thick slices of bread, but the bread slices are up to you. It makes delicious sandwich bread!
  • Smoked Deli Turkey – deli meats are thinly sliced and are perfect for this turkey club or any other turkey sandwich recipe.
  • Provolone Cheese – This cheese gives the sandwich an Italian flair with rich, yet slightly tangy cheese.
  • Shredded Lettuce – any kind will do, but shredded iceberg lettuce is perfect.
  • Sliced Pepperocinis – you can use other vegetables too like cucumbers, onions or anything that gives the sandwich a crunch.
  • Mayonnaise – mayo pairs well with honey mustard or dijon mustard if you like that combo.
  • Pesto – use canned pesto or you can make your own.
  • Red Wine Vinegar – adds a salty, zesty flavor to the sandwich.
  • Oregano – just a little fresh oregano adds to the Italian flavors.

An Italian Turkey Sandwich

To elevate the best turkey sandwich recipe, an Italian flair is the best way to go. By adding a thin layer of pesto sauce, red wine vinegar, oregano and throwing it all on baked Foccacia bread. Feel free to customize it with additional ingredients like roasted red peppers, sundried tomatoes, arugula, or balsamic glaze for extra flavor.

The Art of the Sandwich

If your idea of a sandwich is a child’s peanut butter and jelly on flimsy white bread, it’s time to rethink what a sandwich can be. Check out these grown up versions of the go-to lunch option when it comes to kids and adults. Try making yours on a bun, or with a wide variety of breads. The Turkey Over Italy Turkey Sandwich works well on the flavorful and sturdy focaccia bread. But other sandwiches are better served on a hoagie roll, pretzel roll, whole wheat bread and more.
