White Chocolate Popcorn Ingredients
Picking the perfect ingredients is key in this popcorn. Take this white chocolate popcorn and turn it into a gourmet, fancy popcorn that is full of flavor and deliciousness! Kids and adults love this popcorn and request it often.
- Popcorn – Using gourmet popcorn will help enhance the flavors and create a more decadent treat. It is also a pure white color. We used gourmet white microwave popcorn.
- White candy melts – This melted white chocolate will be drizzled over the top of the popcorn. I prefer the Wilton brand, but any brand is great and works well. White chocolate chips or almond bark will work too.
- Food coloring – Choose your color for the holiday or special occasion.
- Colored candy melts – This is optional if you prefer to purchase the color ahead of time instead of using food coloring.
Suggestions for Perfect Popcorn
All you need is three ingredients and a microwave! Does it get any easier than that?! You will love how quickly this popcorn is made. Pop your popcorn, and then add in some sweetness for a delicious treat!
- Importance of popcorn – I use gourmet white microwave popcorn because I love the crisp white color against the colors of the white chocolate, but you can use air-popped popcorn too. Steer clear of super buttery brands for this recipe though. It will become soggy if they are too buttery.
- Melting chocolate – When melting white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, be sure not overheat the chocolate. It is easier to burn white chocolate compared to chocolate melts. You will want melt chocolate in 15 to 20 second intervals.
- Preparing popcorn – Using parchment paper, spread the popcorn on a baking sheet and sift through to make sure you get all the popcorn kernels out of there that did not pop. Nobody wants to bite down on one of those!
- Drizzle white chocolate – Make sure to spread the white chocolate mixture evenly over all the popcorn, then toss to coat. Read about adding extra toppings in the recipe card below.

Frequently Asked Questions
Absolutely! If you are wanting to pop your own popcorn instead of using a microwaveable kind, you will need to measure out ½ cup of popcorn kernels for every bag. You will need 1 ½ cups of kernels for this white chocolate popcorn recipe.
I can usually find the Wilton Candy Melts at Walmart and Michael’s Craft Store in the cake decorating section. Wilton makes candy melts in a variety of colors as well. Pink, blue, and green candy melts make for great accents to popcorn. You can use them all and make rainbow popcorn!
Yes! The great thing about this recipe is you can use your own creativity to flavor the popcorn any way you want to. With the white chocolate popcorn base, you can add any color or flavor. I used pink candy melts here, but I have also used peanut butter-flavored candy melts, milk chocolate candy melts, gingerbread candy melts, and peppermint-flavored candy melts to drizzle over the white popcorn.
Once your popcorn is cooled completely, then you can drizzle your white chocolate over the top of it. If your popcorn has not cooled before adding the melted chocolate, then the popcorn will become soggy. Let the white chocolate popcorn sit out and wait for the white chocolate to harden and cool at the same time before storing it in an airtight container.
If the popcorn is sealed in an airtight container, it will last for at least a week. Keep it in a cool, dark place like your pantry or a cupboard to help keep it fresher longer. Do not store it in the refrigerator. The popcorn will get soggy if you put it in the fridge. Though, it’s so yummy, I doubt it’ll last that long.

How to Make White Chocolate Popcorn

Ingredients
- 3 bags gourmet white microwave popcorn
- 24 ounces white candy melts (Wilton brand works great)
- 2 drops food coloring and/or flavoring , optional
- 8 ounces colored candy melts , optional
Instructions
- Spread a large piece of wax paper out on the counter top.
- Pop three bags of microwave popcorn in the microwave according to the directions. Place popcorn in a large bowl and shake the bowl back and forth to get the un-popped kernels to the bottom of the bowl. Gently transfer the popped corn to another large bowl. Throw out the un-popped kernels (we don't want to break any teeth!)
- Place the white candy melts into a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave at 50% power or defrost setting for 1 minute. Stir thoroughly, being sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the bowl. If the candy is not completely melted, microwave for another 30 seconds and stir again. Repeat this process until the white chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Place ¼ of the melted candy in a separate bowl and set aside.
- Pour the white chocolate over the popcorn and toss until the popcorn is covered. Spread the popcorn over the wax paper and let it cool. The white chocolate will harden and not melt on your hands when you pick it up.
- Add food coloring and flavoring of your choice to the saved melted candy.
- Using a fork, drizzle the colored candy over the white chocolate popcorn and let it cool.
- Once cooled, the white chocolate popcorn can be kept in an airtight container or sealed plastic bag until ready to serve.
Notes
For extra coated popcorn
- Add all 24 ounces of white candy melts to the popped popcorn.
- Melt an 8 ounces bag of colored candy melts in the microwave using the same method as before.
- Using a fork, drizzle the colored candy over the white chocolate popcorn and let it cool.
I tasted something like this at a store open house & wanted to buy some but would be expensive so I am so glad to find this recipe thank you
Thank you, Valerie! It is so much cheaper to make your own, and I actually like it better. Costco recently started selling a Reese’s popcorn that my son loves, but it’s $7.99 – and the bag is not that big. I used this recipe but with chocolate and peanut butter melts drizzled over the white chocolate popcorn and we like it much better than the store bought version.
I wanted to try this recipe for a baby shower snack, however the shower will be outside and it’s hot and humid. Do you think this coated popcorn snack will hold up in the heat without melting?
It might get a little melty and messy in the heat. Maybe try something without chocolate like these Cinnamon Almonds (https://www.favfamilyrecipes.com/cinnamon-almonds/)?
Is it an advantage to add marshmallo to the mix.
We have not tried it that way – I think it would make the popcorn too sticky – but let us know if you try it!
Chocolate covered popcorn is my favorite! This is adorable!
this is the prettiest popcorn ever! Thanks for the recipe!
I am making this for our next family movie night! It look delicious!
We love eating popcorn but it’s so fun to add chocolate to it! Love it!
This is down right addicting! I love white chocolate, this looks great.
I tried mixing melted chocolate with popcorn and the popcorn went all soggy and chewy. Is there a way to make it stay crisp?
The popcorn should stay crisp. You want to be sure that the popcorn has cooled before adding the melted chocolate and that the melted chocolate is just barely melted, if it is too hot the popcorn will be soggy. Once you toss the melted chocolate in with the popcorn and you spread it onto the waxed paper, the white chocolate needs to completely cool before storing it in an airtight container. I hope this helps!
Be sure to take unpopped kernels out . Friend lost a crown biting a kernel.
How long can this be stored. ? before going bad or does it?
Was thinking of making for a fundraiser. But would like to make ahead of time so I have enough.
If the popcorn is sealed in an airtight container, it will last for at least a week. Keep it in a cool, dark place – like your pantry. Do not store it in the refrigerator. Good luck with your fundraiser!
how many days does chocolate popcorn lasts if packed in airtight container??!
It never lasts very long in our house…because we can’t stop eating it! But, I would guess 5-7 days.
why it shouldn’t be refrigerated??
The popcorn will get soggy if you put it in the fridge!
Crazy question…..where do you buy the Light Cocoa Melts? I’ve never seen it in any my shopping trips.
I found them recently at Walmart. I’ve also had good luck finding a variety of Wilton Candy Melts at Michael’s Craft Store. Hope this helps!
