Ingredients for Easy Oven Nachos

The toppings for this easy nacho recipe are endless! Just pile on your favorites and start munching. These are just ideas to get you started making oven nachos your way!

  • Tortilla chips – You can use corn tortillas and bake them ahead of time to make chips or just your favorite bag of corn tortilla chips! Make sure it is a sturdy chip that will hold the toppings without breaking.
  • Chicken – We like to use a couple of chicken breasts grilled and cut into bite-size pieces for these chicken nachos. Steak would taste delicious on these nachos too! You could use shredded chicken, pork, or beef too.
  • Black beans – Rinse and drain black beans in a strainer to help reduce the amount of sodium.
  • Cheese – Cheddar, sharp cheddar cheese, Monterey jack cheese, a Mexican blend, anything you like! Freshly shredded cheese gives you that melty cheese look and extra flavor.
  • Tomatoes – Diced tomatoes or your favorite pico de gallo are a great addition to nachos. They are refreshing and fresh-tasting!
  • Green onions – Dice green onions to sprinkle over top the nachos after they are baked. This is a great garnish to have for a bite of spicy flavor.
  • Toppings – Sour cream, guacamole, and salsa are all great ways to add additional flavor!

Make It Your Own

Oven nachos are versatile and an easy recipe to substitute or make additions with. Choose the perfect cheese, protein, and toppings, and make it look good with garnish sprinkled on top. From red onion to black olives, to shredded lettuce, anything you would layer on your favorite tacos, you can add to this oven nachos recipe. The variations are endless!

  • Protein – I made this with grilled chicken and black beans because that is what I love. You can substitute shredded beef, ground beef mixture, shredded chicken, ground turkey, or shrimp, or go the vegetarian route and use refried beans.
  • Taco seasoning – When cooking your meat add in some homemade taco seasoning for an extra boost of flavor!
  • Even more toppings – There are also plenty of options for toppings in addition to what is used for this recipe. Jalapeños, pickled jalapeños, green chilies, sliced olives, shredded lettuce, bacon, or sliced avocados. These can all be added to make your nachos the best!
  • Garnish – Squeeze fresh lemon or lime juice over top of the oven nachos for a zesty and refreshing flavor. Add fresh cilantro over top for extra color and appearance as well as taste!

“This is one of my favorite go-to, easy meals! I like to sometimes give it a bbq twist by covering the chicken in bbq sauce, and adding cilantro on top. So good!”

Frequently Asked Questions

What temperature should the oven be for nachos?

Baking at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 15 to 20 minutes will melt the cheese on top of the chips. The amount of toppings you have and how long you want to bake them depends on the timing.

How do you make nachos not soggy in the oven?

To prevent nachos from going soggy when baking in the oven, you need to pre-bake the chips for a few minutes in the oven. This will crisp the chips and give them a base foundation. The ingredients will now bake on top of the chips rather than soaking into the chips themselves.

Can I use any type of tortilla chips?

Yes! Make sure the chip is sturdy and can withstand heat and toppings. Most tortilla chips work great for oven nachos.

What cheese works best for nachos?

A softer cheese works best! You can use cheddar cheese, Monterey cheese, Colby jack cheese, or a mixture of cheese types. It is best to use freshly shredded cheese.

Do I need to pre-cook the meat?

We like to pre-cook the meat. It makes the oven nachos bake quicker and is easier to assemble.

How do I prevent nachos from getting soggy?

Distribute the toppings evenly in a single layer on a baking sheet. Try not to place nacho cheese sauce or shredded cheese in one spot. Cover it throughout the nachos.

Reheating Baked Oven Nachos

Place any oven nachos that are leftover in the refrigerator for three days. When ready to reheat, place them in the oven until they are warmed through the cheese has softened to a melty cheese texture.
