A Dole Whip in a glass with a green straw

The first time my whole family went to Disneyland together we were so excited for the rides and meeting the characters, but we were also excited to try all the delicious treats! Everyone told us we absolutely HAD to try the famous Dole Whip. I remember walking off of the Indiana Jones ride and waiting in line at the Tiki Juice Bar wondering what could be so special about some soft serve ice cream. Then, I took my first bite of creamy, sweet, tropical Dole Whip and I was HOOKED! The pineapple flavor was so tart and fresh and the ice cream was incredibly smooth. Now, the Tiki Juice Bar is a mandatory stop on my Disneyland itinerary – bonus points if I get to enjoy my treat while watching the Enchanted Tiki Room show!

What is a Dole Whip?

Created in 1984 by the Dole Food Company, Dole Whip is a a dairy-free soft serve dessert item made from real pineapple. Although the overwhelming flavor is pineapple, it has a certain tropical flavor that is absolutely delicious, something coconutty and creamy. Many wonder what makes this treat so creamy and sweet; the original recipe uses coconut cream and honey to enhance the natural pineapple. This frozen treat is very popular in Disneyland and the Magic Kingdom. You’ll see many people walking around the Disney parks with a tottering cup full of bright yellow Dole Whip, or even a Dole Whip Float, the same pineapple soft serve, but with added pineapple juice to make it float.

  • First, add all the ingredients to the blender in the order listed.

  • If you are serving serving right away, pour into cups or glasses. If you want to get the classic swirl, place in a freezer safe container and freeze for about 40 minutes.
  • When the mixture is firm enough to pipe, place in a piping bag with a 1M star tip. Pipe into glasses and serve.

How to Get the Dole Whip Swirl

When I was serving up my completed Dole Whip, I wanted a beautiful presentation, that classic, quintessential yellow swirl. So, what I did was pretty easy! I put the finished product in a piping bag with a large 1M star tip and squeezed into my glass cups, it looked great, just like at Disneyland! You can pipe the Dole Whip into whatever vessel you want, whether these are bowls, cups, shells, emptied out pineapples, or coconut husks. Using the piping bag with a 1M star tip is an easy way to make the twirly whirly pattern you are going for with minimal effort. When I knew I wanted to pipe the Dole Whip, I froze the finished mixture for a little bit before piping so it would be stiff enough to pipe.

Variations

Dole Whip doesn’t have to just be pineapple. You can use many other frozen fruits to create this delicious mixture, have it taste great, and still get that creamy texture. Some different flavors you could do: strawberry, mango, raspberry, orange, banana, coconut, so many more. There are also options to mix it up! Swirl vanilla ice cream or vanilla soft serve with your Whip as you are serving it up for a creamy vanilla flavor and beautiful look. For a zesty flair, add lime juice to whatever fruit concoction you are making to create a slight sour punch and tropical element. Combine fruit ingredients for a a more than pineapple-flavored Whip. It can be pineapple and strawberry, or pineapple and mango! This recipe is just a jumping off point.
