Chocolate Waffles

These chocolate waffles are such a fun special treat to serve for breakfast or brunch. It combines a few of my favorite recipes: chocolate cake, waffles and a little something extra on top. These waffles have a slightly crunchy texture on the outside, tender and fluffy on the inside, and the rich chocolate flavor is perfection. Serve it with a dollop of whipped cream, strawberries, or our incredible German chocolate topping made from coconut frosting and praline pecan syrup. YUM! No matter how you top them, these chocolate waffles should be put in regular rotation at your breakfast table. Your family will love them!

Ingredients for Chocolate Waffles

The ingredients for this chocolate waffle recipe are simple, pantry staples so you can mix up a batch any time the chocolate cravings strike! Here’s all you need:

  • All purpose flour – white flour works best but you could substitute half whole wheat flour too.
  • Sugar
  • Baking powder – you’ll need about three teaspoons
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder
  • Eggs – use two and separate the yolks from the whites
  • Milk – this recipe is better with whole milk but you can use any milk you have
  • Melted butter
  • Vanilla extract

That’s it! The recipe doesn’t call for salt, but you can toss in a dash or two to enhance the flavors. You can also give these waffles extra protein by adding a scoop of chocolate protein powder to the flour mixture.

How to get Perfect Texture

There are just a couple of extra steps in this waffle recipe but trust me, it’s worth it.

  1. First, mix the dry ingredients in a large bowl.
  2. In another bowl, lightly beat the egg yolks.
  3. Then add the butter, milk and vanilla to the egg yolks.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the flour mixture and stir until just combined.
  5. Using a mixer in a medium bowl, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form.
  6. Finally, fold the egg whites into the batter
  7. Bake in a waffle maker using cooking spray so they don’t stick.

Toppings for Chocolate Waffles

Depending on when you’re serving these waffles, you can provide a whole buffet of toppings. If you’re having them for breakfast or brunch, opt for fresh berries, maple syrup, bananas, strawberries, and whipped cream.

For dessert, scoop vanilla ice cream and drizzle with chocolate sauce, chocolate chips, caramel syrup or any of your favorite ice cream sundae toppings. Or turn your waffle into German chocolate cake with our tasty German chocolate topping and pecan praline syrup.

Can Chocolate Waffles be Frozen?

Yes! In fact, this is a perfect recipe to double or triple, make the waffles and freeze them for later. Store them tightly covered in the freezer for up to three months. To thaw, pop them in the toaster or in the oven until they’re warm. They’re the perfect food to have on hand for last minute company when you need a quick and unique dessert.
