This homemade Chex mix is so much better than any of the pre-made snack mix bags you can buy at the store. It’s such an easy appetizer recipe that anyone can make. Chex Mix is such a terrific snack for feeding a large group whether you need something to munch for hours during a family game night or an appetizer for the big game. Plus, it fills your house with the most decadent smell while it bakes!

Everyone loves the almond and coconut flavors mixed with the traditional chocolate muddy buddy ingredients. I love having a big batch ready when the kids get home from school or at the ready when we have a movie night. So yummy!

Almond Joy Homemade Chex Mix Ingredients

Some people call chex mix puppy chow or even dog food. This chex mix is mixed with all the flavors from an almond joy candy bar. It is the perfect combination and gives that candy bar taste with these delicious ingredients in every bite.

  • Chex mix – Corn chex cereal, wheat chex cereal, and rice chex cereal all have a combination of flavors and different textures in each cereal mixture type. This variety of chex mix adds more combination to the puppy chow!
  • Club cracker minis – These are fun crackers to throw in for their buttery flavor but also their shape and softness of them. They soak in the flavor and really add to this homemade chex mix.
  • Pretzel sticks – Add in a little crunch and salty goodness.
  • Cheerios cereal – Always a kid’s favorite dry cereal to enjoy with or without milk. Pour some cereal into the mix too.
  • Roasted almonds – A soft crunch full of flavor really adds the almond to the joy! It is the perfect compliment to this mix and really gives it that candy bar taste and texture.
  • Coconut – You can’t forget the coconut! It is soft and creamy with that extra sugary taste. Perfect for this chex mix.
  • Mini chocolate chips – Subtle bites of chocolate that fill your tastebuds! We love chocolate and these mini chocolate chips are the perfect balance in this mixture.
  • Coconut coating – Melt together in the microwave or on the stove the butter, sweetened condensed milk, and coconut pudding for a sweet and delicious topping over the chex mix. Take your almond joy chex mix to the next level with this sauce.

How to make Almond Joy Chex Mix

This almond joy snack mix is by far one of the best mixes yet! This is the perfect snack for your daily outings, game night, or snack time after school. It is full of amazing deliciousness in every bite!

  1. Stir – Add all the dry ingredients to a large bowl and mix together.
  2. Coconut sauce – Mix together the melted butter and sweetened condensed milk and pour over the dry ingredients while mixing.
  3. Combine – Then sprinkle on the dry pudding mix while continuing to toss. Continue to mix until all the ingredients are evenly coated.
  4. Prepare – Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper, wax paper, or a slipmat baking mat, and spread the mix evenly over the top.
  5. Bake in oven – Spread out over paper towels on the counter to cool. Here I like to sprinkle on a little extra coconut and mini chocolate chips.

Suggestions for Homemade Chex Mix

This is perfect for everyday snacking and creating the best mix for your family. Add in all your favorite candy, chocolate, or nuts to make this even better! You can’t go wrong with this homemade snack that tastes just like your favorite chocolate treat from the grocery store.

  • Add-ins – The more crunch, the better! I like to add all kinds of ingredients like Cheerios, bite-sized pretzel bites, pretzels, crackers, nuts, and even rye crisps to the usual Chex cereal. All the different varieties of textures and shapes make this a fun snack for kids of all ages!
  • Add chocolate! A big part of what makes this mix taste like Almond Joy is the chocolate chips. You can use regular-sized semi-sweet chocolate chips or mini versions. I’ll add a handful of M&M candies or other chocolate candy as well if I have some on hand for a delicious mixture of milk chocolate. Even white chocolate works great too!
  • Coconut flavoring – Another huge component of this homemade Chex Mix is the coconut flavor. You can toast some sweetened coconut ahead of time by placing it on a cookie sheet in the oven for a few minutes or just add a handful from the bag. It gives the mix a sweet flavor and delicious texture.
  • Nuts – Similar to the coconut, I like to toast the almonds before adding them to the mixture as well. Toasting almonds in the oven gives depth to the flavor that just can’t be beaten! And it only takes a few minutes to roast a few almonds. Save a few for snacking!
  • Pudding mix – If you can’t find coconut pudding mix you can use vanilla pudding mix and add a couple of drops of coconut extract to the mixture before drizzling over the top of the crunchy ingredients.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to buy chex mix or make your own?

Making your own chex mix is cheaper than the purchase of snack foods at the grocery store. When purchasing all the ingredients at first, it may seem more but you are able to make several containers of the chex mixture.

How do you make chex mix not soggy?

By using too much liquid you can have a soggy chex mix. Use the recipe below to have the correct amount of liquid to chex mix ratio. If you do change any of the liquid ingredients you will need to modify the chex mixture as well.

How do you store almond joy chex mix?

Once the almond joy chex mix is completely cool and at room temperature, place the delicious snack into an airtight container, canister, or ziplock bag and store it for about one week. This makes for pantry-perfect packaging!
