Frequently Asked Questions

What is hot fudge sauce made of?

Usually, a traditional hot fudge recipe is made from cream, butter, chocolate, and sugar. The combination is delicious and gives a thick and creamy sauce.

What is the difference between hot fudge and chocolate sauce?

Hot fudge has a thicker texture compared to chocolate sauce. Chocolate sauce is a thinner syrupy substance that doesn’t stick as well to cold ingredients whereas hot fudge will lay smoothly overtop ice cream or other dishes that are served together. The chocolate sauce has more sugar, water, and corn syrup to keep it that thin and runny texture.

Why is hot fudge called hot fudge?

Hot fudge is called this because it is a chocolate sauce that is thick like fudge but creamy because of the heat that keeps it hot or warm.

How To Store and Reheat

On the off chance you make too much hot fudge and need to store it, here are a few things to bear in mind. For starters, this is similar to the storage and reheating tips from our two-ingredient Chocolate Fondue. Follow these storing tips to help make this sauce last the longest!

  • Refrigerator – The hot fudge sauce can be kept in the fridge for about the same amount of time as any store-bought jar. Store in an airtight container for about 3 months.
  • Reheating – As for reheating, put in a saucepan on the stove and warm slowly until the fudge mixture thins enough to dip or drizzle. It will still be quite thick.
  • Do not use the microwave – It is best not to reheat this sauce in the microwave. The chocolate will separate and harden quickly.

  1. Could I use this hot fudge sauce to fill thumbprint cookies? Is it thick enough and will it set slightly upon cooling?

    Thanks so much!
    Janet

    1. Yes you should be able to put them in jars and keep them in the fridge. From what I understand, it isn’t safe to do home canning for hot fudge for long term storage. Hope this helps.
