These Parmesan potatoes on the grill are one of our very favorite side dishes. They are so versatile and can be served with any of your favorite grilling recipes! During the hot summer months, grilling your potatoes is THE way to go. They are so much easier than doing baked potatoes or roasted potatoes in the oven. By having the potatoes on skewers and grilling them, there is no need to heat up your oven (or your home)!
What Potatoes are Best for Grilling?
- For this recipe, we use colorful gemstone potatoes with a mix of yellow, red, and purple potatoes. I found these beauties at the Albertsons on Broadway in Boise.
- You can also use fingerling potatoes or the small Yukon gold potatoes.
- I liked using the small potatoes because they cook faster and they hold together when you skewer them.
- You can use whole potatoes and cut them smaller, but you run the risk of them falling apart when skewered.
Ingredients
- Baby potatoes
- Water
- Butter – melted
- Parmesan cheese
- Garlic – minced
- Seasoning salt
- Black pepper
- Parmesan cheese – to taste
- Chopped parsley – to garnish
Suggestions for Serving
- To serve these potatoes, you can give each individual a skewer for a serving.
- You can also place them all in a bowl and serve them family-style.
- We have found if we are serving a lot of people, it’s easier to just put them in a big bowl because some people (especially kids) just want a potato or two. They seem to go further this way. However, I think serving them as skewers is more fun.
- We like to serve them with ranch or a side of sour cream.
- Lay potatoes out flat and add some cheddar cheese, sprinkle some bacon and some ranch dressing over the top. Be sure to add the cheese right when you remove them from the grill so the cheese can melt over the potatoes. So good!
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, we microwaved the potatoes for 10-12 minutes before grilling so they wouldn’t be raw. They don’t have to be tender, a little crunchiness is okay!
Different herbs will produce different flavors, but since these are garlic potatoes, you’ll want cloves garlic for that perfect garlic flavor, also, parmesan cheese. We used a seasoning salt, but you could pick and choose individual herbs and spices you want, such as dried oregano or dried basil.

The perfect potato side dish for the holiday parties! I am going to make this for my next party! 🙂
These potatoes are the perfect side dish for almost anything. I loved all the flavors.
I will be making these as a side for Christmas dinner this year. Can’t wait!
Sorry not each side, total 6 on the grill.
Hi! Your total time is off by 10 – 15 minutes. Just noticed it as I was making them. 10 minutes prep, 10 to 12 minutes cooking (microwave), 10 to 15 minutes rest, 6 minutes each side on the grill. Or am I missing something?
Thanks for catching that. I will go back and check the recipe to make sure the times are correct. Thanks again!
If I wanted to do these for a tailgate could I microwave and then refrigerate prior to grilling until the next day when I would pack, travel and grill?
