Cooking eggs just got WAY easier! Making hard boiled eggs in the Instant Pot takes all the guess work out of getting smooth, fully cooked, perfectly white and golden eggs every time. No more guessing how long to let the eggs boil, or worrying about a grey ring around the hardened yolk.

We have been using the Instant Pot to cook dozens of eggs for all kinds of recipes in minutes. It saves so much time, and the eggs are done to perfection. It really helps speed things along when our children are begging for more eggs to dye at Easter time! Try this simple method in your Instant Pot and we promise you’ll love it!

Ingredients in Instant Pot Boiled Eggs

  • A dozen eggs up to 18 eggs
  • Cold water
  • If you’re eating hard boiled eggs as a high protein snack, don’t forget to sprinkle with salt and pepper!

The 5-5-5 Method

For the best hard boiled eggs, remember this method: 5-5-5. You will want to use a timer. Five minutes to pressure cook the eggs, five minutes to natural pressure release (then quick release the remaining pressure), then five minutes for the eggs to rest in a bowl of ice water. That’s it! No guess work, no mess ups, nothing but beautifully hard boiled eggs that peel easily and look gorgeous in any recipe.

Suggestions for this Recipe

  • The best eggs to hard boil are those that are at least three days old. Super fresh eggs tend to be harder to peel.
  • The best part of this method is you can cook up to 18 eggs at a time in the Instant Pot with just one cup of water! Feel free to stack them on top of each other, it won’t hurt a thing.
  • To peel your eggs, simply roll them on the counter until a small crack forms, then peel. The shell comes off quickly and easily and you get delicious, smooth eggs!
  • You can make perfect hard boiled eggs without an Instant Pot too. Try our recipe for Perfect Easy Peel Hard Boiled Eggs and see how easy it is to get the same perfect color and shape on the stove top.
  • Hard boiled eggs will keep for up to a week in the refrigerator.
  • There are a few Instant Pot accessories that will work if you don’t have a metal trivet including the steamer basket and an egg rack.

For Soft Boiled Eggs

If you prefer a soft boiled egg with softer, slightly runny yolks, it’s easy to adapt this recipe. Simply alter the cooking process to 3-5-5. Pressure cook the eggs for 3 minutes, natural release the pressure for 5 minutes and then quick release remaining pressure. Use tongs to move the hot eggs from the Instant Pot to the ice bath where they will rest for 5 minutes.

5 minutes to pressure cook the eggs, 5 minutes to naturally release the pressure, and 5 minutes in an ice bath. Works every time!

Tried this method for dying Easter eggs this year and it couldn’t have been simpler! Easily, the best way to cook hard boiled eggs!

  2. This method worked very well in my instant pot duo 6 qt. I cooked twelve eggs in a single layer on the steamer basket. One of them cracked. They all peeled nicely.

    1. I boil my eggs because I usually cook several dozen at a time (3-5). Why is 18 eggs the most you can do?

      1. If you do more than 18 they just don’t fit in the Instant Pot as well. It also takes longer for the IP to heat up with more eggs inside.
