You probably already have most of these ingredients in your kitchen. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Bananas: Use ripe, brown-spotted bananas for natural sweetness.
  • Applesauce: Keeps the cookies soft and moist.
  • Rolled Oats: Old-fashioned oats work best for that perfect chewy texture.
  • Milk: Adds moisture and helps the cookies brown beautifully.
  • Vanilla Extract: A dash of flavor to elevate your cookies.
  • Cinnamon: For a warm, cozy hint of spice.
  • Raisins: Add a fruity twist (or swap for chocolate chips if you’re feeling indulgent).

How to Make Gluten-Free Oatmeal Cookies

Ready to bake? Let’s get started:

  1. Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
  2. Mix It Up: In a large bowl, mash the bananas until smooth. Stir in the applesauce, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon. Add the rolled oats and raisins, mixing until combined.
  3. Shape and Bake: Use a cookie scoop or spoon to drop the dough onto your prepared baking sheet. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the cookies are lightly golden.
  4. Cool and Enjoy: Let the cookies cool on a wire rack (if you can wait that long!) and enjoy them warm or at room temperature.

  • Prepared baking sheets – Place parchment paper or silicon mats on your baking sheets when placing your cookie dough on them. This will help them bake evenly as well as slide off easily.
  • Cookie scoop – I like to use a medium cookie scoop to make sure that all my cookies are evenly baking together in the oven.
  • Cooling racks – Once the cookies are baked, place them on a wire rack to finish cooling. This helps the bottoms to stay soft and chewy.
  • Store Smart: Keep cookies in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Substitutions or Additions to Try

  • Chocolate chips – Not quite as healthy, but substituting chocolate chips for raisins does make these even better. Use milk, and dark, or semi-sweet chocolate chips to make oatmeal chocolate chip cookies.
  • Nuts – If you love nuts and the extra texture in your cookies, add chopped walnuts to the cookies.
  • More mix ins – You can toss in dried fruit, shredded coconut, or even a sprinkle of flax or chia seeds for an extra nutritional boost.

Questions About Gluten-Free Oatmeal Cookies

What makes these cookies healthy?

These cookies skip the butter, sugar, and flour, relying on natural ingredients like bananas and applesauce for sweetness and texture. By avoiding refined sugar and unhealthy fats, these cookies provide a cleaner and more wholesome treat option.

Can I use rolled oats instead of quick oats?

Absolutely! Rolled oats work wonderfully in this recipe and give the cookies a great chewy texture. If you have quick oats and prefer a finer consistency, you can pulse rolled oats in a blender or food processor before using them.

How do I soften hard oatmeal cookies?

Place a slice of bread in the airtight container with your cookies. The moisture from the bread will soften them up within a few hours. Alternatively, you can microwave the cookies for a few seconds to regain some softness. Use gluten-free bread if you are wanting to keep the cookies free of gluten.

How can I make these cookies vegan or dairy-free?

To make the cookies vegan, simply use a non-dairy milk such as almond, soy, or oat milk. The rest of the ingredients are already plant-based, so it’s an easy switch!

Are these cookies suitable for kids?

Yes! These cookies are a fantastic snack for kids. They’re naturally sweet, easy to chew, and packed with wholesome ingredients. Plus, kids love helping mix the dough and shape the cookies.

Storing and Freezing Cookies

To keep your cookies fresh:

Freeze: Place cookies on a baking sheet, freeze until solid, then transfer to a freezer bag. They’ll stay fresh for up to 3 months.

Refrigerate: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.

  1. Did I completely miss the boat on this one? Other than the raisins, mine are tasteless and heavy. The first batch, even with longer baking time, are doughy. The second batch I baked even longer. They are edible. The add-ins above may improve flavor but I found these really lacking.

      1. Bake times can vary with different ovens and elevation. Be careful not to over bake. Thank you for your comment!

  2. 5 stars
made these last night and brought them to work today. HUGE SUCCESS!!! I don’t like bananas and even I liked these! Based on the feedback above, I adjusted as follows: replaced the milk with 2tbsp almond milk and 1tbsp veg oil. Chocolate chips i went with 2/3 cup. I used unsweeted applesauce but added 3/4 tsp Truvia (stevia). They were yummy and people were not believing they were “guilt free”. Great recipe.

  3. 5 stars
These were awesome, I threw in some cranraisins, 1/2 C of walnuts and 1/2 C of chopped sugar free chocolate Hershey candies. Super yummy!

I added chia seeds & shredded coconut to these & they turned out AMAZING, thank you so much!!!!!!
I am always looking for healthy sugar-free recipes since recently having to cut out sugar, dairy and eggs from my diet…… THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU!!!!!!!

        1. Yum! Thank you for sharing your ideas. Kudos to you for cutting all of those things out of your diet. That is not easy. I’m glad you can enjoy this recipe!

    1. Great idea! Thanks for sharing the tip! I haven’t used stevia in baking before. I’m glad to know it works well.

  4. 5 stars
I just made these and they’re great! They are 2 WW points plus, or only one if you make 30 mini cookies. Wonderful guilt-free treat!

    1. Yes! You can use the natural sugar free applesauce. Regular applesauce works great too, it just adds a little more sugar.

  5. I just made this. There not as bad as I thought they would be, however they are missing something.. I will continue making these just for that fact im trying to watch what I eat. If you have any other healthy recipes please share.

  6. Made these and sad to say I was disappointed. Not sure if there needed to be salt in these but my family and I felt they were a bit tasteless. 🙁

I made these this morning and after 3 cookies I decided they were keepers. I followed a few tips from previous bakers. I pulsed the oatmeal then had to add more oats, batter was still wet. Those extra oats I didn’t pulse. I added a small box of raisins (1 oz box) along with the choc chips, and about 1 1/2 Tbs of aguave syrup to sweeten. Flattened a little and baked for 20 minutes. Very good, and I’m still taste testing. LOL

    1. I checked the ingredients on myfitnesspal. With chocolate chips it is 14g carbs per cookie, 88 cals, 3g fat, 2g protein.
These look so yummy! I’m going to try them today 🙂
