A Spinach Dip for Every Occasion

My family has been making this dip for as long as I can remember. It’s a must-have at our Thanksgiving table, but we also love serving it on Christmas Eve, at Super Bowl parties, 4th of July picnics, and just about any potluck. It’s light, flavorful, and unbelievably easy to make! Plus it is packed with spinach so I am going to say it’s basically a salad. Ok, maybe that’s a stretch, but still, having a bunch of spinach makes it somewhat healthy, right?

Spinach dip is always a crowd-pleasing appetizer, and while some versions are served warm, this one is chilled—making it especially refreshing in the summertime. But honestly, we enjoy it year-round! Give it a try and you will see why this is one of our go-to spinach recipes!

Spinach Dip Ingredients

This delicious dip comes together with just FIVE ingredients! Here’s what you need:

  • Frozen spinach – Thawed spinach works best for this recipe since it is not heated up.
  • Knorr vegetable recipe mix – This can be found next to the seasonings in the dressing or spice aisle. It has all the flavor you will need mixed in one packet.
  • Sour cream – Thickens the spinach dip and adds an extra flavor to the homemade dip. For a tangy twist you can use Greek yogurt instead.
  • Mayonnaise – A creamy base with a sweet and savory taste.
  • Water chestnuts – An added ingredient that gives this spinach a nice little crunch. It is unique and a special touch most don’t use.

Tips for making Spinach Dip

Let’s be honest, the Knorr seasoning is the reason why this dip is so easy. All the flavors are nicely balanced right there in the packet. You really just have to dump everything all in and you are set. Really the hardest part is thawing the spinach. Here are some tips on how to best thaw and drain frozen spinach:

  • Thawing spinach – In order to thaw spinach, you need to leave it in the fridge overnight or at room temperature. Make sure your spinach in the bag is also in a bowl in case the liquid drips out.
  • Draining spinach – Use a paper towel or a colander. If using the paper towel, wrap the spinach in the wet paper towel and squeeze the spinach allowing the liquid to drain from the spinach into a bowl. Use the colander by pressing the spinach down into the holes allowing the liquid to drain into a bowl.
  • Garnish – Top with cold, shredded mozzarella cheese or parmesan cheese for an extra garnish.

Using Fresh Spinach Instead of Frozen

If you’d rather use fresh spinach instead of frozen, it’s easy to swap! Simply chop about 10 ounces of fresh spinach and sauté it in a pan with a little olive oil and salt until wilted. Let it cool, then squeeze out as much excess moisture as possible using a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Once it’s drained, mix it right into the dip just like you would with frozen spinach!

  • Vegetables – Carrot sticks, celery, bell peppers, broccoli, and
  • Crackers – Ritz crackers, Triscuits, or wheat thins are thick and crunchy.
  • Chips – Potato or tortilla chips, pita chips, and ruffles work great for dipping.

Questions About Spinach Dip

Should spinach dip be heated?

Because this recipe calls for sour cream and mayo, it is best served cold. However, we have an absolutely amazing Hot Spinach Artichoke Dip you must try! We also love using fresh spinach in this scrumptious Fresh Spinach Dip.

How long will homemade spinach dip last?

Any leftover dip will store nicely in the refrigerator for up to four days. It’s not recommended that you freeze this dip, since mayo and sour cream don’t generally freeze well and can become watery or grainy after thawing. But we’re pretty sure if you set a bowl of this creamy goodness out at a party, there won’t be much left when the crowd thins!

Storing Leftover Spinach Dip

Place the leftover spinach dip in an airtight container in the refrigerator for four to five days long. When ready to enjoy, stir the contents together before serving.
