The Perfect Summer Dessert

The first time I made this chocolate lasagna, I knew it was a keeper. Imagine creamy layers of sweetened cream cheese, rich chocolate pudding, and fluffy whipped topping all nestled over a buttery, crunchy crust. It’s pure dessert bliss! Trust me, it’s decadent, rich, and absolutely delicious—and you’re going to want to make it right now!

I first made this chocolate lasagna (also called Mud Pie) for a family barbecue, and it was an instant hit. It’s such a cool, refreshing dessert—perfect for hot summer days when you don’t want anything too heavy. Whether it’s a summer picnic, potluck, or just a quiet evening on the patio, this dessert always steals the show. Plus, it’s super easy to make ahead of time and serves a crowd, which makes it ideal for busy days when you need a go-to sweet treat.

What You’ll Need to Make Chocolate Lasagna

This recipe takes a classic dessert concept and simplifies it with a few shortcuts, so you spend less time in the kitchen and more time enjoying it! Most of the ingredients are store-bought and easy to find. Here’s what you need:

  • Flour – Forms the crust and keeps it sturdy enough to hold all those delicious layers.
  • Butter – I use unsalted butter so I can control the sodium level.
  • Pecans – Finely chop them (or buy pre-chopped) for that buttery crunch in the crust.
  • Cream cheese – Let it soften to room temperature for a smooth, creamy layer.
  • Powdered sugar – Sift it before mixing to avoid any lumps in the cream cheese.
  • Cool Whip – The magic ingredient! You’ll divide one carton into layers and topping.
  • Instant chocolate pudding mix – Use two packages for that rich chocolate layer, or get creative with a mix of flavors.
  • Milk – Cold milk works best. I recommend 2% for an extra creamy texture.

Ingredients to make Mud Pie including cool whip, pecans, milk, flour, powdered sugar, butter, butterscotch pudding and chocolate pudding.

How to Make Chocolate Lasagna

I promise, this dessert is so easy to put together, and the results are always impressive. Follow these simple steps to layer up your chocolate lasagna:

  • Step 1: Make the crust – Combine melted butter, flour, and pecans in a bowl, then press the mixture evenly into the bottom of a 9×13-inch pan. Bake at 350°F for 15 minutes and let it cool completely. (Pro tip: Speed up cooling by popping it in the freezer!)
  • Step 2: Cream cheese layer – Mix softened cream cheese, powdered sugar, and half the Cool Whip until smooth and fluffy. Spread this over the cooled crust.
  • Step 3: Chocolate pudding layer – Whisk the instant chocolate pudding mix with cold milk until thick and creamy. Gently spread it over the cream cheese layer.
  • Step 4: Top it off – Spread the remaining Cool Whip evenly on top. Chill the chocolate lasagna in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour (or overnight) to let the layers set.

Why Is This Dessert Called Chocolate Lasagna?

Chocolate lasagna gets its name from the way it’s assembled—layer by layer, just like the savory Italian dish. Instead of pasta, meat, and cheese, you have sweet layers of buttery crust, creamy cream cheese, rich chocolate pudding, and fluffy whipped topping. This playful name adds to its charm, and it has become a popular no-bake dessert across the country, loved for its simplicity, cool texture, and crowd-pleasing flavors. It’s a fun, irresistible twist on layered desserts that everyone can enjoy!

Toppings to Make It Extra Special

Here’s where you can get creative! Dress up your chocolate lasagna for any occasion with these topping ideas:

  • Crushed Oreos – Adds a crunchy chocolate bite.
  • Chocolate or caramel drizzle – Perfect for an elegant touch.
  • Crushed candy bars – Try Snickers, Butterfinger, or Reese’s for extra crunch.
  • Fresh berries – Strawberries, raspberries, or blueberries add a refreshing pop of color.
  • Sprinkles – Use seasonal or colorful sprinkles to match any holiday or celebration.
  • Nuts – Add crushed pecans, walnuts, or almonds for texture.
  • Gummy worms – Perfect for a fun Halloween twist!

My Best Tips for Chocolate Lasagna Success

  • Chill thoroughly – Make sure to let the dessert chill long enough so that the layers firm up. This makes slicing much easier.
  • Swap the pudding flavor – Want to mix things up? Try pistachio, butterscotch, or even cookies and cream pudding for a fun twist.
  • Slice like a pro – Use a sharp knife dipped in hot water and wiped dry between each cut for picture-perfect slices.
  • Make it ahead – This dessert is perfect to make the night before! Just store it covered in the fridge.
  • Candy layer – For an added layer of texture, add a crushed-up candy bar, cookie crumbs, chocolate chips, or chopped walnuts or pecans to the top as a garnish.
  • Garnish – Drizzle chocolate sauce or hot fudge sauce over the top of each serving for all you chocolate lovers out there.

Questions About Chocolate Lasagna

How do I keep this dessert cold at a picnic?

Keep it chilled until you’re ready to serve. A cooler with ice packs works perfectly for transporting.

What if I have a nut allergy?

No problem! Swap the pecan crust for a chocolate cookie crust instead.

How long should I whip the cream for the filling?

You will want to whip the cream until stiff peaks are formed. You do not want to overwhip though. This will create a grainy texture.

Can I make the mud pie ahead of time?

Sure! Prepare the mud pie ahead of time with all the layers and store it in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours. Serve cold!

Can I freeze mud pie?

It’s best fresh, but you can freeze the crust separately and assemble the rest right before serving.

How can I make a gluten-free mud pie?

Yes, all you need to do is sub the flour in this recipe for a gluten free cup for cup flour blend. I like the Namaste GF flour blend from Costco.

Can I make mini mud pies instead of one large pie?

Yes! Use small containers or cupcake tins for individual servings—they’re adorable and perfect for parties.

Storing Leftovers

Store any leftover chocolate lasagna tightly covered in the fridge for up to 5 days. Honestly, it gets even better the next day when the layers have had time to meld together. If you’re transporting it, use a dome lid to protect the whipped topping.

This pie is seriously nothing short of amazing! My daughter is obsessed, my wife is obsessed and this is not going to be made all the time. Thank you!

  2. I make this all the time but it’s called Four Layer Delight. It’s not anything like the Mud Pies I know and I’m from the South.

  3. This looks delicious! Is a cube of butter the same as one stick of better? Sorry if that is a stupid question but I am just not sure.

Yummy! I brought this to a dinner we were invited to and it was a HUGE hit. I could eat the entire pan all by myself. I LOVE your blog, thanks for all the great ideas!

  5. Pretty and simple is what we need sometimes. There are those days, I like to fuss and experiment. Then, there are the others when I want someone to give me an easy way to make a delicious, good looking dessert. This sounds like it fills the bill.

My grandma used to make this every holiday and it's always been my favorite! I've never known exactly how to make it and I'm so excited to have found this! 🙂

  7. OOOOOOH Yum! That looks so good. We are Americans temporarily living in England through my husband's job, and we can't get Cool-Whip here. Bummer!! It's in tons of American recipes that I will just have to wait to make.

    1. I am a canadian living in Australia, and same deal here. No butterscotch chips, graham crackers, or cool whip. That wipes out all my favorite recipes! You should see my suitcase after a trip home – it’s all filled with food!

This was my favorite dessert growing up, and I still love it. I've tried just about every flavor of pudding and they are all fabulous!
