These are perfect to make for a crowd, and can be enjoyed by many!

Enjoy this delicious restaurant favorite in the comfort of your own home! Take your sliders to the next level with this simple and easy White Castle slider recipe. Layer the buns, meat mixture, and onions on top of each other to make the best tasting sliders yet!

Ingredients in White Castle Sliders

These aren’t your ordinary beef patties with cheese! You’ll love the unique flavor that results from combining the following ingredients:

  • Ground beef – Use lean ground beef for this slider recipe. A little fat from the hamburger in the meat is okay. It will hold the sliders together better.
  • Lipton onion soup mix – This comes in a two-pack in a box. It seasons the meat with a nice, savory onion flavor. You will only be using the dry mixture, so no need to make up the packet.
  • Peanut butter – Yes, peanut butter! Just a tablespoon, and trust me on this! If you are really against using the peanut butter, you can just leave it out, but it holds the meat together nicely.
  • Milk Gives the meat a tender and juicy texture.
  • Onion – Yellow onion that is finely chopped. You will scatter the onions over the top of the ground beef and bottom buns during the baking process.
  • Slider buns – I found mine in the bakery section of the grocery store. You can also use Hawaiian rolls in place of normal dinner rolls, or mini bread rolls.
  • Cheese slices – About 10 to 12 Kraft American cheese slices, or any type of cheese you like.

Step by Step Instructions

As I’ve already mentioned, these aren’t your typical cooked patties! It is a great meal to feed a crowd! It’s easy to make a lot of these sliders all at once using these step-by-step instructions. These white castle sliders come together quickly and easily!

  1. Mix – Mix the ground beef, Lipton onion soup mix, peanut butter, and milk in a large bowl.
  2. Flatten – Spread the mixture on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to roll over the meat to smooth it out over the bottom of the baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes.
  3. Bake – Take the pan out of the oven, sprinkle the diced onions all around the edges, then bake for 15 more minutes.
  4. Layer – Remove from the oven, spoon the onions from the edges all over the top of the meat, and layer with cheese slices. Bake another 7 to 10 minutes or until cheese has melted.
  5. Slice – Slice the cooked patties with a pizza cutter. Place the patties between the slider buns.
  6. Serve – Add any condiments, pickles, or extras that you like over the patties, slap on the top buns, and enjoy!

Toppings for White Castle Sliders

Once you have your sliders baked and cut, you can top them with all kinds of toppings. Here are a few ideas to take your sliders to the next level!

  • Condiments – You can’t go wrong with the classics – ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise.
  • Pickles – I prefer the dill pickle slices best, but you can try bread and butter or lime pickles for various flavors. If you are a pickle fan, then go crazy with the pickles. For us, we like to use about 20 to 24 dill pickles on our sliders.
  • Cheese – Choose your favorite cheese! American cheese will give you that signature flavor, but you can use cheddar, Swiss cheese, pepper jack, or Colby jack. Any cheese is good cheese when it is melty cheese!
  • Meat – Add on a slice of ham or cooked bacon strips for a thicker, more hearty slider.
  • Garlic powder – Sprinkle garlic powder on the burgers for some extra flavor.
  • Topping – Brush a little melted butter on top of the buns and add sesame seeds for a fun appearance and extra texture!

What to Serve with White Castle Sliders

These white castle sliders are delicious and filling by themselves, but for the authentic burger experience, we love to serve them with french fries. You can also enjoy them with a lighter side like salad or chips.

  • French Fries Classic crinkle-cut or shoestring fries make a perfect side to complement the sliders. You can make your french fries from scratch or cook up frozen fries in the air fryer!
  • Onion Rings Crunchy, golden-brown onion rings add a delicious texture and flavor contrast.
  • Coleslaw A creamy and refreshing coleslaw pairs well with the savory sliders, balancing out the flavors.
  • Side Salad A light side salad with fresh greens, tomatoes, and a vinaigrette dressing offers a healthier option.
  • Sweet Potato Fries – For a twist, serve sweet potato fries that provide a slightly sweet and savory contrast.
  • Chips – Crispy potato chips, whether regular or flavored, are an easy and convenient side option.
  • Fruit Salad A bowl of fresh fruit salad adds a refreshing touch to the meal, balancing the richness of the sliders.
  • Corn on the Cob Grilled or boiled corn on the cob can be a fun and flavorful addition to the meal.
  • Soup – Pair the sliders with a warm bowl of soup, such as tomato soup or a hearty chili, for a satisfying combination.
  • Macaroni and Cheese Creamy mac and cheese brings a comforting element to the meal.
  • Baked Beans – The sweetness and heartiness of baked beans complement the sliders’ flavors well.
  • Mashed Potatoes Creamy mashed potatoes are a comforting side that can be a great addition.

“This was so good! Tasted just like White Castle. Can’t wait to make these for family gatherings!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave out the onions?

Yes, of course you can, but I suggest giving them a try. Even if you don’t like onions, they add a wonderful flavor and texture that just can’t be duplicated.

Why does this recipe call for peanut butter?

I know it sounds weird, but the peanut butter adds a terrific texture and depth of flavor that is difficult to substitute. If you have a nut allergy or just can’t do the peanut butter, feel free to leave it out.

Can I use pre-packaged dehydrated onions for the topping?

Yes! These work great and still have the classic onion flavor that helps provide the White Castle taste!

Storing the Perfect Sliders

Make these ahead of time or learn to freeze them the proper way! Store them for a quick snack the next day or freeze them for a later time. These white castle sliders are an easy weeknight dinner that everyone enjoys!

  • Making ahead – Prepare the sliders ahead of time and store them in the fridge until ready to reheat.
  • Storing – Place the cooled white castle cheeseburger sliders in an airtight container in the refrigerator for three to four days.
  • Freezing – Wrap the extra sliders in plastic wrap, then place in a freezer-safe bag for up to a month. Just make sure to thaw the burgers out completely in the refrigerator before microwaving so they cook evenly.
  • Reheating – These little sliders make the best leftovers! Take them out of the fridge and pop them in the microwave for about 30-40 seconds and they taste just as fresh as the night before!

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 (2-ounce) packet Lipton soup mix (1 packet)
  • 1 tablespoon peanut butter
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 12 cheese slices Kraft or Velveeta cheese slices work great too
  • 12 slider rolls I found mine in the bakery section of the grocery store. You may be able to fit more on depending on the size of the buns.

Instructions

  • Heat oven to 350 degrees F. Set aside a baking sheet.
  • In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef. Lipton onion soup mix, peanut butter, and milk.
Ground beef in a glass bowl
  • Spread the meat mixture on the baking sheet. Use a rolling pin to roll over the meat to smooth it out. Bake for about 10 minutes. The meat will shrink. Put the diced onion all around the edges and bake 15 minutes.
Cooked hamburger meat on a baking sheet with onions all around the edges
  • Remove from the oven, spoon the onions from the edges all over the top of the meat, and layer with cheese slices. Bake another 7 to 10 minutes or until cheese has melted.
Hamburger meat covered with cheddar cheese
  • Add the tops of the rolls (the bottom part of the rolls will just sit on the counter.) Bake for about 5 more minutes.
Ground beef topped with onions, cheese, and buns
  • Remove from oven. Slice the meat into individual sliders with a pizza cutter. Pick up the slider meat and its top bun with a spatula and set it on the bottom bun.

Notes

  • I found my slider rolls in the bakery section of the grocery store. You may be able to fit more or fewer buns on the meat, depending on the size of the buns.
  • Once you have your cheese sliders baked and cut, you can top them with all kinds of toppings ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, or other condiments; dill pickle slices (you’ll probably want 20-24 dill pickle chips for these, especially if you’re a fan of dill pickle); lime pickles; garlic powder; and a pinch of salt.

  1. Do you go ahead and cook the meat first then mix the PB, Milk and onion soup. Then spread on cookie sheet

  2. This sounds great, I am a bit taken aback by the use of peanut butter however I will try this after reading all the comments. You did forget one item that is part of the White Castle burger… the dill pickle slice. Thanks for taking the time to share this with us all.

Made these tonight for dinner. AWESOME! I had to drain grease off each time I did the next step but not a big deal. Next time I may try lower fat beef next time. Simply delicious! I followed the recipe exactly and so happy I did. Thank you!

  4. Sounds delicious – I’ll definitely try these! (Just a note – you might want to look over your instructions. Some of the steps are listed multiple times, and it’s a little confusing.) Thanks very much for sharing!

    1. Thanks for catching that!!! Some of the instructions must have gotten copied over twice when we did our new format. I fixed it, it should make more sense now. Thank you again, I hope you like it!

  5. 5 stars
These were AMAZING!! Taste just like Krystals which is pretty much the same as white castle.. We don’t have white castle here. I just added a lil ketchup mustard and pickle just like Krystal’s!! Yummm thanks!!

    1. Sorry, but I dont agree with that. Krystals does not taste like WC at all. There is no comparison. Had Krystals once and never had them again, even the kids didnt like them.

      1. THERE IS NO REPLACING A WHITE CASTLE BURGER! I am 66 years old and I love WC. I use to live on them . Only we got them for 10 cents a piece. If I lived close to one I would be still getting them. The town HAD a Krystal , but it closed, tried it once never went back. Sorry Krystal you ain’t WC.

        1. AMEN!!! I live in GA where there is only Krystal-no WC whatsoever! I’m from Louisville, KY where there is only WC, so it’s very hard for me, because I’ve been a White Castle fanatic my whole life! My husband, however, who is a born and raised Georgian, had never had WC until I had a friend who was visiting from Ky bring me a sack of 10. Although he was reluctant to admit it, FINALLY admitted that WC is far superior to Krystal! I went back home to Ky several months ago and ate there around 4 times in 5 days AND brought some home…on the Greyhound! I said all of that to say that I can’t wait to try this recipe! The ones in the freezer section are NOT the same!!!

        2. Brenda, I’m 62 and I remember when you could get WC for 8 cents and I thought it was outrageous when WC went up to 10 cents…lol (gas was also about 25 cents a gallon …those were the days my friend). I lived in Missouri at that time. Now I reside in Texas with no WC. I was so excited when Krystal burger came to town. I heard they taste just like WC. I tried Krystal’s once and never went back. No comparison. WC burger meat to me has the soft consistency of a meat loaf and to get that texture you add socked bread with water squeezed out to the meat recipe. That’s probably what the peanut butter does in this recipe. So if you have a peanut allergy try the soaked bread instead. I can’t wait to try this recipe as is and then I will rate it.

      2. Sorry, I have lived in Ga most of my whole life and eaten Krystals since before I can remember and they are the BOMB!! I lived in Cincinnati where I first tried White Castle. They are basically the same. The only difference in the 2 is the condiments they put on them. I love them both but feel there is no difference. I am trying this recipe tomorrow. My sister n law made them before and instead of the peanut butter her recipe used gerbers beef baby food. Not sure about that one but I will try the peanut butter.

        1. I’ve had both many times and, honestly, I can’t tell the difference.

Wish either would come to Colorado 🙂

      3. I’ve had both, and enjoyed both.. to me, they both taste the same. Happy with either.

BTW, I’m doing these this week and can’t wait. Peanut butter? Ok, if you say so, and the other members liked it, I’m in!

This post is now like 7 years old or so, and now the grocery stores actually sell ‘slider’ buns. Cool!

          1. 4 stars
I liked them , I think next time I’ll use half the amount of peanut butter ( I doubled the recipe ) I also used Hawaii rolls ( a generic less sweet roll ) over all , I would make them again

      4. Absolutely I am from the Bronx NY where White Castle originated. I now live in Florida and tried the Krystal burgers”yuck” there is nothing like WC. I wish I could have someone buy them for me from the Castle and send them to me. Everyone say buy rhem frozen NOT THE SAME. I MISS THEM.

          1. I live in Kansas and I have yet to see a daggone WC! I always have to wait till I drive to Kentucky to get a WC! FYI: Krystal’s is NOT the same!

      5. No, Krystal does not taste like White Castle. I am from Indiana and grew up on White Caste burgers. Then, we moved here to SWFL and there are no White Castles. I am so glad I found this recipe and can not wait to try it!

      1. Krystal’s does not use ketchup. I ask White Castle not to put ketchup on my burgers. I personally like Krystal’s better (I grew up near Savannah, GA) but they are very similar, just one has ketchup (WC) and one has mustard (Krystal’s).

          1. Yes, reading this article I was wondering where they came up with the mustard and ketchup. These condiments are not put the WC’s in St.Louis.

These are so good! My kids loved them! I am sending the left overs with my son to school lunch tomorrow. He is so excited to show them off to his friends.

  7. 5 stars
Just finished eating these for dinner and they were wonderful! The only change I made was using potato bread rolls instead (just personal preference). Thank you so much for this great recipe that will be joining the monthly rotation!

    1. I would try almond butter (if you aren’t allergic to almonds) or just leave that part out. It will still taste fine.

    2. Try tahini it’s like peanut butter but it’s sesame seeds creamed instead. It should not change flavor but will add creamy quality to the mix

      1. 5 stars
Yes!! I saw some where believe it or not ,that WC uses Gerber beef and gravy in their recipie.. Im trying it now wrining this..

    1. Have you tried Wowbutter? It is a soy-based, nut-free substitute for peanut butter and it tastes virtually identical to the real thing. Very tasty.

      1. In the directions it says 20 buns and cheese slices. Then in the video it’s only 12 for each?

        1. It really depends on the size of your rolls. You want to go by whatever size will fit over the length of your pan. The smaller Hawaiian rolls come in packs of 20, the larger are packs of 12… but the overall surface area is close to the same. Hope this helps!

    2. 5 stars
It’s the peanut butter that gives it the white castle burger taste, otherwise it’s just burger and onion.

    3. 5 stars
You can skip the peanut butter and use a jar of veal baby food instead. Google white castle copy cat burgers using baby food veal for the exact recipe. You’re welcome!

I made these for my sons 14th Birthday-he loved them & so did everyone else. They were very similar to White Castle-not quite as good, but a great substitute. I am from an area w/WC burgers-well 20 m away. My husband made many long trips there for pregnancy cravings~ I am surprised I didn't give birth to one;)

  9. These look delicious! What a great idea to put the meat on a cookie sheet. That makes it really easy to make. Thank you for all of the great ideas and recipes.

I made these last week and I am a HUGE white castle burger fan! These are fantastic! My sister came over and she could not believe how great they tasted! Very Easy! and they do freeze well as stated!

      1. I only had a baking sheet and no rolling pin. I put the mixture on an 11X17 sheet and covered it with plastic wrap. I then used another baking sheet and flattened it out. Worked good. Came out very good. Thanks.

        1. How could the peanut butter ruin it? I only used a pound of hamburger because it’s what I had. Still used the tablespoon of peanut butter. I didn’t taste it at all! Unless someone has allergies I can’t understand how they could be ruined?

          1. 5 stars
The people probably put more than a tablespoon and don’t know how to measure properly lol

        2. 5 stars
I live near Chicago and the peanut butter gives it it’s “unique White Castle” taste. I make these over and over again, even though White Caste is literally 2 miles from me. Plus, it’s way cheaper!

No WC or Krystals here in Oklahoma but the local Walmart sells them frozen…and they ain’t bad. (I have lived in places where WCs are and the frozen ones seems pretty close to what I remember from those days). I buy a box every now and then. I do plan to try this recipe, the peanut butter is…well, intriguing! 😀

      1. My local grocery store wanted 9 bucks for a frozen box of wc burgers. I bought the ingredients I needed for 5 bucks. Never had a wc burger before so I won’t be able to compare but they always look so yummy on tv. My dad has used peanut butter for burgers since I was a kid.

    3. 5 stars
Oh my gosh these were good. I’m going to say it: they were way better than any WC I’ve had. I only had a lb of 93 % lean and it shrank down to perfectly fit the slider buns. I left the onions off a quarter of it for my onion-repulsed son (but used the soup mix and he didn’t notice). It was the first dinner in a long time that he didn’t ask how many bites he had to eat. I recently discovered your blog and bought both cookbooks. I’m an instant fan! Thanks!

      1. Wow Melissa, than you so much!!! What a huge compliment! Thank you for purchasing our cookbooks! We hope you and your family will continue to enjoy our recipes 🙂 You totally made my day!

    4. 5 stars
I followed the recipe exactly and it turned out amazing! Oh and flatting the meat in the pan with a rolling pin… so easy & a great idea!!! I can’t wait to make them again and surprise my friends from up north they are going to love it!!!

      1. Hi Sophi! So glad you liked these sliders! Thanks for taking the time to come back and let us know how they turned out for you!

        1. Hi Erica, do you have any tips for freezing? I want to make these ahead of time but never froze burgers/sandwhiches before. Worried it’s going to come out gross when reheated

          1. We haven’t tried freezing these, so I can’t recommend it. Let us know how it turns out if you try it!

    5. 5 stars
They turned out great, even without the onion soup mix. (Didn’t have any on hand) I poked holes in the pressed meat to give it the true WC thinness. I made a double batch with the hope of freezing some for later but they were all gobbled up! Thanks for a great recipe!
