Ingredients in White Castle Sliders

These aren’t your ordinary beef patties with cheese! You’ll love the unique flavor that results from combining the following ingredients:

  • Ground beef – Use lean ground beef for this slider recipe. A little fat from the hamburger in the meat is okay. It will hold the sliders together better.
  • Lipton onion soup mix – This comes in a two-pack in a box. It seasons the meat with a nice, savory onion flavor. You will only be using the dry mixture, so no need to make up the packet.
  • Peanut butter – Yes, peanut butter! Just a tablespoon, and trust me on this! If you are really against using the peanut butter, you can just leave it out, but it holds the meat together nicely.
  • Milk Gives the meat a tender and juicy texture.
  • Onion – Yellow onion that is finely chopped. You will scatter the onions over the top of the ground beef and bottom buns during the baking process.
  • Slider buns – I found mine in the bakery section of the grocery store. You can also use Hawaiian rolls in place of normal dinner rolls, or mini bread rolls.
  • Cheese slices – About 10 to 12 Kraft American cheese slices, or any type of cheese you like.

Step by Step Instructions

As I’ve already mentioned, these aren’t your typical cooked patties! It is a great meal to feed a crowd! It’s easy to make a lot of these sliders all at once using these step-by-step instructions. These white castle sliders come together quickly and easily!

  1. Mix – Mix the ground beef, Lipton onion soup mix, peanut butter, and milk in a large bowl.
  2. Flatten – Spread the mixture on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Use a rolling pin to roll over the meat to smooth it out over the bottom of the baking sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for about 10 minutes.
  3. Bake – Take the pan out of the oven, sprinkle the diced onions all around the edges, then bake for 15 more minutes.
  4. Layer – Remove from the oven, spoon the onions from the edges all over the top of the meat, and layer with cheese slices. Bake another 7 to 10 minutes or until cheese has melted.
  5. Slice – Slice the cooked patties with a pizza cutter. Place the patties between the slider buns.
  6. Serve – Add any condiments, pickles, or extras that you like over the patties, slap on the top buns, and enjoy!

Toppings for White Castle Sliders

Once you have your sliders baked and cut, you can top them with all kinds of toppings. Here are a few ideas to take your sliders to the next level!

  • Condiments – You can’t go wrong with the classics – ketchup, mustard, and mayonnaise.
  • Pickles – I prefer the dill pickle slices best, but you can try bread and butter or lime pickles for various flavors. If you are a pickle fan, then go crazy with the pickles. For us, we like to use about 20 to 24 dill pickles on our sliders.
  • Cheese – Choose your favorite cheese! American cheese will give you that signature flavor, but you can use cheddar, Swiss cheese, pepper jack, or Colby jack. Any cheese is good cheese when it is melty cheese!
  • Meat – Add on a slice of ham or cooked bacon strips for a thicker, more hearty slider.
  • Garlic powder – Sprinkle garlic powder on the burgers for some extra flavor.
  • Topping – Brush a little melted butter on top of the buns and add sesame seeds for a fun appearance and extra texture!

What to Serve with White Castle Sliders

These white castle sliders are delicious and filling by themselves, but for the authentic burger experience, we love to serve them with french fries. You can also enjoy them with a lighter side like salad or chips.

  • French Fries Classic crinkle-cut or shoestring fries make a perfect side to complement the sliders. You can make your french fries from scratch or cook up frozen fries in the air fryer!
  • Onion Rings Crunchy, golden-brown onion rings add a delicious texture and flavor contrast.
  • Coleslaw A creamy and refreshing coleslaw pairs well with the savory sliders, balancing out the flavors.
  • Side Salad A light side salad with fresh greens, tomatoes, and a vinaigrette dressing offers a healthier option.
  • Sweet Potato Fries – For a twist, serve sweet potato fries that provide a slightly sweet and savory contrast.
  • Chips – Crispy potato chips, whether regular or flavored, are an easy and convenient side option.
  • Fruit Salad A bowl of fresh fruit salad adds a refreshing touch to the meal, balancing the richness of the sliders.
  • Corn on the Cob Grilled or boiled corn on the cob can be a fun and flavorful addition to the meal.
  • Soup – Pair the sliders with a warm bowl of soup, such as tomato soup or a hearty chili, for a satisfying combination.
  • Macaroni and Cheese Creamy mac and cheese brings a comforting element to the meal.
  • Baked Beans – The sweetness and heartiness of baked beans complement the sliders’ flavors well.
  • Mashed Potatoes Creamy mashed potatoes are a comforting side that can be a great addition.

“This was so good! Tasted just like White Castle. Can’t wait to make these for family gatherings!”

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave out the onions?

Yes, of course you can, but I suggest giving them a try. Even if you don’t like onions, they add a wonderful flavor and texture that just can’t be duplicated.

Why does this recipe call for peanut butter?

I know it sounds weird, but the peanut butter adds a terrific texture and depth of flavor that is difficult to substitute. If you have a nut allergy or just can’t do the peanut butter, feel free to leave it out.

Can I use pre-packaged dehydrated onions for the topping?

Yes! These work great and still have the classic onion flavor that helps provide the White Castle taste!

Storing the Perfect Sliders

Make these ahead of time or learn to freeze them the proper way! Store them for a quick snack the next day or freeze them for a later time. These white castle sliders are an easy weeknight dinner that everyone enjoys!

  • Making ahead – Prepare the sliders ahead of time and store them in the fridge until ready to reheat.
  • Storing – Place the cooled white castle cheeseburger sliders in an airtight container in the refrigerator for three to four days.
  • Freezing – Wrap the extra sliders in plastic wrap, then place in a freezer-safe bag for up to a month. Just make sure to thaw the burgers out completely in the refrigerator before microwaving so they cook evenly.
  • Reheating – These little sliders make the best leftovers! Take them out of the fridge and pop them in the microwave for about 30-40 seconds and they taste just as fresh as the night before!

  • In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef. Lipton onion soup mix, peanut butter, and milk.
Ground beef in a glass bowl

Notes

  • I found my slider rolls in the bakery section of the grocery store. You may be able to fit more or fewer buns on the meat, depending on the size of the buns.
  • Once you have your cheese sliders baked and cut, you can top them with all kinds of toppings ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, or other condiments; dill pickle slices (you’ll probably want 20-24 dill pickle chips for these, especially if you’re a fan of dill pickle); lime pickles; garlic powder; and a pinch of salt.

Yum!! These are delicious! We had them for dinner tonight. My daughter, who says she does not eat meat, ate several of them then wrapped all the left overs in plastic to take to school tomorrow. They are the closing thing I have found to White Castle since I lived in New York 39 plus years ago.

  2. Going to make these for my family for game day! Im excited! Wondering if you can use avacodo instead of peanut butter? Maybe I’ll try it both ways.

  3. Ummmmmmm -the Midwest is NOT the East coast – we are the MIDWEST. Sliders are the product of a chain restaurant called White Castle. I lived long enough in the bay area to be amazed how little most residents are of the USA beyond the west coast.

      1. What?! Surely you realized it’s a chain. It’s based out of the midwest. It’d be like saying you made In and Out in honor of Utahns. Sure they exist in Utah, but they aren’t FROM there! 🙂 Plus we Midwesterners tend to get disgruntled when others forget about us for the coasts. Frankly, it looks ignorant.

    1. When I saw “East coast thing” I was confused as well LOL I grew up on White Castle in Illinois and Missouri, and they were actually founded in Kansas. It’s good to see they’ve branched out so far though, but I wish they had some in Texas! The ones from the freezer section at Wal-Mart aren’t even close! Thank you for the recipe Erica!

        1. Haven’t tried turkey before… I don’t know how it will affect the taste/texture. Sorry! Wish I was of more help!

  4. well maybe i made them wrong but i followed the recipe to the T
and it came out tasting like a peanut flavored burger drenched in onion soup mix

I don’t normally comment on recipe sites, but, every now and then something comes a long…
I made these for some coworkers the other night (Thursday), it is now Monday and I have made them seven times. The last two times were double batches. These are just outstanding!
And, I trusted you, the peanut butter really works and is also what intrigued me about them in the first place…plus I love the look on people’s faces when I tell them what the ‘secret’ ingredient is.
    Thanks so much for sharing!

    1. I am so glad you (and your co-workers) liked them! I always make them around this time of year because it is so much easier than making individual burgers. Thanks so much for the comment!

  6. Loved these! However, instead of pushing bottom of buns to the side, I toasted them. Then I put mustard, ketchup, & a dill pickle chip on them. I did put mayo on some of them since I am a mayo person!

  7. Easy to make. I’d cut back on the peanut butter a bit, but otherwise a great turnout. Used potato rolls.

    1. I agree with this comment. A little too much of a PB undertone. But with this in mind, I will try to remake with half of it and see how it turns out. Thanks for the recipe.

These turned out absolutely amazing! Tastes just like the original…we added yellow mustard and pickles. If you like White Castle and/or Krystal, you’ve got to try this recipe!!

  9. I’m going to try these even the pb ;o) I’ve been craving wc but the closest place is like an hour away. I even wrote wc and they aren’t going to put one here. My husband and I wanted them so bad back home for yrs but it was only 1/2 hr away to Indy or Greenfield to get them. But the yr after he passed away the finally built one in our town but I had moved to Ky. The ones in the store just aren’t the same either. So I’m going to try these instead. thanks for the receipe.

I made these for first time for my husband. I ended up using 2# hamburger. It ended up making them a little bit thicker. Still good. I was told I forgot ” pickles”. I was skeptical on the peanut butter as well. All turned out. Making them again tonight.

  11. 5 stars
These were DELICIOUS and as close to White Castle as you can get. I did add a dill pickle chip and used Kroger slider buns….. I like the idea of dumping the grease after each step and will try that next time because I will make them again!

Gotta admit I was skeptical about these, having grown up in Brooklyn, New York where White Castle is plentiful. I decided to give these a try due to the fact that now I live in Southwest Missouri and can’t get them. Gotta say I’m impressed, they’re really good and pretty darn close. Kudos!!!!

    1. I also add the other half of the roll to the top bun ,cut side out . All parts are heated that way. Had a similar recipe for years. Like this recipe better..I think the peanut butter does it! Enjoy ♥

  13. Just curious what size cookie sheet? Is that a silly question? Very excited about this recipe though the peanut butter has me intrigued! My hubby loves White Castle I have never been because the closest one is about 60-70 minutes from here!

    1. I use my biggest baking sheet I have so I have room to work. You’ll want the meat as flat as possible and it will shrink. Im unable to use my rolling pin due to how tall the sides are on my pan so I use the side of a cup or pat it down with my hands
