Traditional Thanksgiving Pies
Pumpkin Pie
There is something about making your own pumpkin pie that you just don’t get when you buy your pie from a store. I think some of it is the amazing way that your house smells when it is baking but, more importantly, it just tastes so much better! We have eaten a LOT of pumpkin pies in our time, and we believe this is the best classic pumpkin pie recipe. It’s got just the right amount of sweetness and spice. In addition to being delicious, it’s really such an easy pumpkin pie recipe.
Apple Pie
After the leftover turkey, gravy, and cranberry sauce is tucked away in the refrigerator and all the dishes are done comes my favorite part of every Thanksgiving: snuggling up by the fireplace with a slice of this Homemade Apple Pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, and reminiscing with the family about past holidays. There’s something warm and familiar about the sweet apple filling and buttery crust with ice cream melting into every crevice.
Gluten-Free Apple Pie
Every guest at your holiday table deserves a slice of pie, regardless of dietary restrictions. And this Gluten Free Apple Pie is truly the best we’ve ever tasted. Plump, juicy apples baked underneath a thick crumble topping is going to change the way you think about anything gluten-free ever again. Be sure to add this to your list of Thanksgiving pies for your gluten-intolerant guests.
Brown Butter Pecan Pie
Brown butter adds so much flavor to the traditional pecan pie. This pecan pie is really easy to make and you probably have most of the ingredients on hand. Pecan pie is perfect for when you aren’t craving fruit or chocolate…it is sort of in between. The baking time for pecan pie can vary depending on your oven. Usually, 40-50 minutes will do the trick. If the crust looks like it’s getting too brown, but the filling isn’t quite set up, cover the outer edge of the pie with foil.
Thanksgiving Fruit Pies and Cobblers
Easy Berry Pie
This Easy Berry Pie is… well, so easy! One of the things I love most about this recipe is that it uses frozen berries. This makes it possible to enjoy a delicious berry pie any time of the year. The natural juices that come from the berries as they thaw provide all of the moisture needed for the glaze in the filling. The filling sets up so well and stays inside the first cut piece of pie and doesn’t spill out onto the plate. I hate it when that happens!
Dutch Apple Pie
This Dutch Apple Pie recipe comes from my husband’s family. When they first told me about it, I was intrigued by an apple pie that had a crumble topping (or streusel topping) instead of a traditional lattice top. I was even MORE intrigued by the fact that you bake this pie inside of a brown paper bag. Add a big scoop of vanilla ice cream and a drizzle of caramel sauce for the perfect Thanksgiving dessert.
Island Pecan Pie
All of the Thanksgiving pies on the menu don’t have to be traditional. Try something new this year! This Island Pecan Pie is a tropical treat you can make for any occasion! I tried it a few years ago for Thanksgiving in place of our classic pecan pie and it was a smashing success. This recipe originally came from an Arkansas diner that I tracked down on Pinterest. This pecan pie recipe is creamy and flavorful with sweet chunks of pineapple and crunchy pecans and coconut flakes. The textures are as appetizing as the flavors!
Strawberry Pie
If you are lucky enough to live in a place where you can get fresh strawberries in November, this is a luscious pie to add to your Thanksgiving dinner menu. It’s light, and colorful and is a nice dessert to complement a heavy meal. Try it with a giant scoop of ice cream!
Peach Pie
There’s truly nothing better than a slice of warm peach pie…unless it’s that same slice of pie with some fresh whipped cream or vanilla ice cream on top! The best peach pie filling is one that is somewhat simple. It perfectly complements the taste of the delicious peaches without overpowering them. The peach is naturally fantastic—you really don’t need to add a massive list of ingredients to it. Every item in this filling is there because it highlights the star of the show.
Pumpkin Cobbler
Pumpkin Cobbler (also called pumpkin dump cake or upside down pumpkin pie) has all the flavors of pumpkin pie but in a rich, buttery cobbler. I like to call it a cobbler because it is made in a similar way to a fruit cobbler. The pumpkin layer goes into the bottom of the dish, then you have a crunchy, cakey, buttery, cinnamon, and sugary crust baked onto the top.
Blackberry Cobbler
This Easy Blackberry Cobbler is easily my favorite kind of cobbler. I love the tartness of the blackberries, the juices seeping into the sweetness of the golden, crunchy cobbler topping. Add a nice big scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream and you won’t be sorry. If you haven’t had blackberry cobbler before I can almost guarantee you that it will quickly become a new favorite!
Apple Crisp
This Traditional Apple Crisp Recipe has been in our family for years and is one that is in regular rotation during the fall months. The tender apples are perfectly cooked; not too soft but not too crunchy. And the crumbly sweet topping is to die for! I could eat it all on its own with a spoon. If you want a simple apple dessert without the fuss of baking a pie, try this apple crisp recipe.
Thanksgiving Cream Pies and Desserts
Coconut Cream Pie
This Coconut Cream Pie recipe is by far the best I have ever had. The coconut custard filling is made from scratch (no pudding mixes here!) and it makes all the difference. The rich and creamy texture is full of coconut flavor. This pie is so much better than anything you can get at a store. Homemade always tastes best, and that couldn’t be truer with this recipe. But that doesn’t mean it’s hard to make. Even a pie-making novice can put this pie together and everyone will think you put more time into it than you actually did.
Raspberry Cream Pie
This Raspberry Cream Pie recipe is so much better than any other homemade raspberry cream pie I have tried. Most Raspberry Cream Pies consist of a cream cheese layer and a separate raspberry layer with a graham cracker crust. However, this pie recipe combines the cream cheese filling and the raspberry filling to make a delicious fluffy creamy mixture. Additionally, we use an Oreo crust. We love the combo of raspberries and chocolate.
Butterscotch Pie
This Butterscotch Pie is rich and creamy, and a scrumptious end to any meal. A rich, creamy filling is spread into a flaky pie crust, drizzled with butterscotch sauce, and sprinkled with butterscotch chips. Add a dollop of whipped cream and get ready to experience a little taste of heaven.
Banana Pudding Dessert
This mind-blowingly good layered dessert first came into my life years ago, when my friend made it for a party. She got the recipe from the one and only Paula Deen, so I knew it had to be good. Crunchy cookies and sliced bananas sandwich a creamy layer of banana cheesecake filling. This dessert serves a crowd, which makes it perfect for Thanksgiving. It makes it easy for everyone to have a slice.
Lemon Meringue Pie
This Lemon Meringue Pie is definitely one of our more treasured family recipes from our mom. We grew up on this desert; it’s been a favorite in our family as far back as I can remember. Our dad always requests it to be one of the pies served at Thanksgiving dinner, many Sunday dinners and it has replaced his birthday cake on more than one occasion. You just can’t beat the tangy lemon curd pie filling, homemade pie crust, and the light and airy meringue on top. Perfection in every bite!
Key Lime Pie
This Key Lime Pie is perfect for the summertime when you want a nice, cool, citrusy dessert. It’s also a family favorite at Thanksgiving. Traditional key lime pie is not bright green in color, even though some bakeries or pre-made pies may have a green tint to them. Traditionally, it is more of a pale greenish-yellow color.
Peanut Butter Pie
Cream Pies are a delicious dessert for any occasion, and this pie is no exception. I was invited to a Thanksgiving pie dessert buffet last Thanksgiving and this pie was the first to go. Everyone loved it! I had never thought of including a peanut butter pie with the traditional pumpkin and apple pies I make at Thanksgiving, but it has definitely made the cut. However, it will not be limited to Thanksgiving by any means! The cool creaminess of this pie makes it an ideal dessert choice any time of the year.
Sour Cream Lemon Pie
Sour cream lemon pie is an all-around winner. Freshly squeezed lemons and rich sour cream give the pie the perfect amount of tartness and creaminess. It has become a must-have at many family gatherings including Thanksgiving, Father’s Day Dinner, Easter and so many more. It’s so easy to make, you could even surprise your family with a mid-week treat! This recipe is a tried and true favorite.
Chocolate Thanksgiving Pies and Desserts
Chocolate Satin Pie
Marie Callender’s Chocolate Satin Pie has been a favorite of mine for years. We used to live close to Marie Callender’s restaurant and we would buy this pie every time it went on sale. It is so rich, creamy, and smooth! A few years ago, we moved to another city and we don’t have Marie Callender’s close by anymore. I’m hosting Thanksgiving dinner this year and I wanted to serve a chocolate cream pie along with pumpkin pie and some fruit pies.
Salted Caramel Pie
This salted caramel pie is the perfect combination of everything sweet, savory, and oh, so good! Simple ingredients for a simple pie! This pie is perfect because it isn’t fluffy, or cream-filled, or fruity. Just rich, chocolate, caramel goodness. The bottom layer is an Oreo pie crust filled with caramel and topped with a chocolate ganache then sprinkled with a little sea salt.
Mud Pie
This mud pie recipe is simple to make, yet rich and indulgent, just the way a perfect dessert should be! Layers of chocolate, buttery crust, cream cheese layer, and fluffy whipped topping make this a dessert that is absolutely to die for! This recipe is a delightful twist on a classic Mississippi mud pie recipe, but with a few shortcuts to make it a bit easier and faster to make.
German Chocolate Pie
While traveling through a small Amish town several years ago, we stopped at an authentic Amish restaurant that served German Chocolate Pie. It was so good we ended up buying an entire pie to eat the next day. Ever since then I have been dreaming about, drooling over, and seriously craving this pie. After many attempts, I finally perfected it. I knew I had it right when my family ate the entire pie out of the pan before it even had time to cool. As far as Thanksgiving pies go, it is not what you typically see on the menu, but try it once, and you’ll be making it every year.
Chocolate Haupia Pie
Haupia Pie is a widely popular pie found in Hawaii. It can have many different variations, like a sweet potato haupia pie, but the most popular is probably the chocolate haupia pie recipe. There are many bakeries in Hawaii that serve this delicious pie so it’s hard to say which bakery made this pie first but I think it is safe to say that it was Ted’s Bakery on North Shore Oahu that made it famous. Chocolate haupia pies are the perfect blend of chocolate, coconut, and cream and it just might be my favorite pie of all time. Ever.

Many great recipes but still looking for the old one my Mom used to bake every Thanksgiving and Christmas – Minced Meat Pie. It was one of my very favorites especially since I never cared for pumpkin and that left me with pecan, lemon meringue and minced meat. I particularly love the spicy flavor of the minced meat and would love to have my late mother’s recipe. If you have one could you please share. Thanks for keeping me up to date on many old great Southern recipes.
We will have to dig through our mom’s old recipes and see if we can find a good minced meat pie recipe. Thanks for the suggestion!
