What is a Tim Tam Slam?

A Tim Tam Slam is a method (some would argue that it is THE ONLY method) to eat a Tim Tam. This method is also know by various names such as: Tim Tam Shotgun, Tim Tam Bomb, Tim Tam Explosion, or Tim Tam Suck. It’s one of those treats that is incredibly popular in Australia but may not be as well known in other countries. It can be compared to milk and Oreos or even “S’mores” here in the United States in that there’s not much to it, and everyone here in the states knows what it is, but people from other countries might give you a confused look if you mention it.

Where I Learned To Tim Tam Slam

My brother-in-law, Beau (Emily’s husband) lived in Australia for 2 years and was the first in our family to learn about the Tim Tam Slam. He bought a pack of Tim Tams and shared this delicious treat with all of us. We have never been the same since. Now it is a fun tradition we do with our kids whenever we have hot cocoa. Tim Tams are always a MUST when we make hot chocolate bars so we can share with everyone we know how to do the Tim Tam Slam.

What Are Tim Tams?

The Tim Tam Slam simply can’t be made without the main ingredient: Tim Tams. A Tim Tam is a chocolate-covered biscuit (or cookie wafer) with a creamy filling. It has layers of chocolate cookie wafers and a chocolate cream filling for the original flavor. Other flavors include dark chocolate and my personal favorite, caramel flavor. They are made by the Australian biscuit manufacturer Arnott’s, which is a sister company of “Pepperidge Farm”.

Where To Find Tim Tams

Tim Tams are easy to find in Australia but can be a little more difficult to find in the U.S. You can get them on Amazon (link) or at specialized grocery stores. We actually found them at our local Albertsons for under $3 a package. If you simply can’t find them anywhere, they are suitable substitutes that you can buy (more on this below).

How to Tim Tam Slam the Right Way

Now that you know all about Tim Tams, it’s time to learn how to Tim Tam Slam. Here’s an easy step-by-step guide so you can get the perfect slam every time:

Step 1: Take a Tim Tam from the package and take a small bite off of one of the corners of the chocolate biscuits.

Step 2: Now take a small bite of the direct opposite corner. so there should be a top corner and bottom corner on opposite sides of the cookie bitten off. See the image below to get the right idea.

Step 3: Place the cookie (or biscuit if you are in Australia) between your thumb and fingers.

Step 4: Hold the biscuit upright and place one end of the Tim Tam in your cocoa (or coffee, or your favorite warm beverage). Then quickly suck the liquid up through the Tim Tam like a straw.

Step 5: Once the cocoa reaches your lips and you feel the cookie start to soften, hurry and pop the entire thing in your mouth. Don’t pause for too long or it will disintegrate into your drink.

Step 6: Experience the heavenly rush of chocolate on your tongue as the iconic cookie disintegrates in your mouth and the chocolate gooey core of the Tim Tam melts away.

Slam Like A Pro

Take your TimTam Slam to the next level and slam it like a pro without using your hands. Bite off the ends and then place one end in your mouth and put your hands on the table (or behind your back). Lean down and sip then throw your head back and catch it in your mouth.

What Tim Tam Flavor Is Best?

This is a great debate. Here in the states I have been able to find 5 flavors: original, dark chocolate (dark choc), white chocolate, dark chocolate mint, and chewy caramel. I know that there are many other flavors out there but they are difficult to find in the U.S. Some of the flavors that I would LOVE to try but haven’t been able to find here are: Double coat, salted caramel, strawberries and cream, chocolate orange creme, choc malt & sticky caramel, and dark choc & sticky raspberry.

That being said, I can only judge what I think is best by what I have tried. For me, I am a BIG fan of dark chocolate so I’ve gotta say that one is my personal favorite. HOWEVER, Emily’s hands-down favorite is the caramel (I’ve gotta admit, the gooey caramel is pretty dang good in the slam). They are ALL delicious though and there truly hasn’t been one that I DON’T like. Try for yourself and let us know your top pick!

Tim Tam Alternatives

As mentioned above, Tim Tams can be tricky to find but there are great alternatives that you can find at various stores. We don’t have an Aldi where we live, but I have heard that the Belmont “Just Divine cookies taste the same. At Trader Joe’s they have the “Aussie-Style Chocolate Creme Sandwich Cookies Coated in Chocolate” which taste almost identical to Tim Tams, and I might get a riot here for saying this, but I actually think they taste slightly better.

What Drinks or Liquids Can Be Used For A Tim Tam Slam?

The most popular beverages to slurp though a Tim Tam are coffee and hot chocolate, specifically Milo malted hot chocolate. We prefer using hot chocolate, mainly because it’s just straight up delicious but also because we aren’t coffee drinkers. You can also use hot tea, milk (hot or cold), or any hot beverage you would be willing to dip a cookie in. Do NOT try doing the Tim Tam Slam with water or juice. You will not be happy with the end result.
