It’s the perfect combination of flavors and textures that will leave your taste buds dancing. Whether you’re looking for a quick and easy lunch or something a little more special for dinner, this sandwich delivers every time. It’s the kind of meal that feels indulgent yet comes together so effortlessly. And the best part? It’s totally customizable, so you can make it exactly the way you like it. Trust me, once you try this, it’ll be your new go-to sandwich! Whether you’re serving it to family, friends, or just treating yourself, this recipe is guaranteed to impress.

Why This Turkey and Brie Sandwich is the Best

There’s something magical about the combination of flavors and textures in this sandwich. You’ve got:

  • Crunchy bread with a soft interior.
  • Savory deli turkey that’s perfectly tender.
  • Creamy brie cheese that’s just the right amount of indulgent.
  • Crisp lettuce and tart apple slices for a fresh bite.
  • Sweet fig butter and tangy Dijon mustard to tie everything together.

It’s so simple to make but feels like something you’d order at a fancy cafe. Plus, it’s super customizable!

Sandwich Ingredients You’ll Need

Here’s what you’ll need to make this incredible sandwich:

  1. Artisan Bread: I love using a crusty French loaf, ciabatta, or even brioche. Look for something sturdy that can hold all the fillings.
  2. Fig Butter or Jam: Trader Joe’s has a fantastic fig butter, but you can also mix fig preserves with softened butter.
  3. Deli Turkey Breast: Thinly sliced turkey works best for layering.
  4. Brie Cheese: Let it come to room temperature so it spreads easily.
  5. Lettuce: Spring greens, arugula, or even shredded lettuce add a nice crunch.
  6. Apple: Granny Smith is my top pick for its tartness, but Honeycrisp or Fuji work too.
  7. Dijon Mustard: Adds a savory kick, but you can substitute with honey mustard if you prefer.

How to Make the Best Turkey and Brie Sandwich

Making this sandwich is as easy as layering the ingredients, but here’s how I do it for the perfect bite:

  1. Prepare the Bread: Slice your artisan bread in half to make a top and bottom. Generously spread fig butter on the bottom half.
  2. Layer the Ingredients: Start with a layer of turkey, then spread the brie cheese evenly on top. Add a handful of greens and a single layer of thinly sliced apples.
  3. Top It Off: Spread Dijon mustard on the top half of the bread and place it on the sandwich.
  4. Serve and Enjoy: Slice the sandwich in half and dig in! You can serve it with a side of fresh fruit, veggies, or soup for a complete meal.

Tips and Variations for this Sandwich

Want to take your sandwich to the next level? Here are a few tips and variations:

  • Types of bread – Get good bread! I used French bread but you could use Ciabatta, Focaccia, brioche bun, baguette, wheat bread, or any kind of bread that looks delicious to you. You want sturdy and thick bread if possible.
  • Turkey slices – Thinly slice the turkey breast for the ultimate bite. Too big of bites will make it too chewy and harder to enjoy all the flavors combined.
  • Making fig butter – This recipe calls for fig butter, and you can find it at Trader Joe’s for just a couple of dollars. Fig butter brings life to the sandwich; don’t leave it out! If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s in your area, you can make your own by mixing fig preserves with softened butter or just spread a layer of frig preserves on the bread. So yummy!
  • Cranberry sauce – Add cranberry sauce to the sandwich. This creates a whole new level of flavor and sweetness!
  • Protein – If you are wanting to try it with chicken breast, ham, or roast beef those are two other great options for this brie sandwich.
  • Pickles – A sandwich is always good with sliced pickles. Try it with dill or sweet pickles.
  • Onions – Caramelized onions are cooked until golden brown and in a skillet and added to the top of the sandwich. You can also slice raw red onions and add them to the turkey brie sandwich.
  • Nuts – Walnuts or crushed pecans are the perfect compliment to this turkey brie sandwich!

What to Serve with a Turkey and Brie Sandwich

Pair this sandwich with a side dish to make it a full meal. Here are some ideas:

  • Soup: Tomato soup or chicken noodle soup are classics that pair perfectly.
  • Salad: A light balsamic-dressed salad or a fruit salad is a great option.
  • Veggies: Serve with carrot sticks, bell peppers, or celery and a side of ranch or hummus.
  • Fruit: Grapes, fresh berries, or extra apple slices complement the sandwich beautifully.

Questions About Our Turkey and Brie Sandwich

Can I use leftover turkey from Thanksgiving?

Absolutely! This sandwich is a fantastic way to use up leftover turkey. You can even add cranberry sauce or stuffing for a Thanksgiving-inspired twist.

What’s the best way to melt brie?

Let the brie come to room temperature first. Then, warm it gently in a skillet or on a panini press for a gooey texture.

Can I make this sandwich ahead of time?

This sandwich is best enjoyed fresh, but you can prep the ingredients ahead of time and assemble just before serving. Avoid adding the lettuce and apples too early to keep them crisp.

Can I substitute fig butter with something else?

If you don’t have fig butter, you can use fig jam, apple butter, or even a combination of honey and Dijon mustard for a similar sweet and tangy effect.

What type of apples work best for this sandwich?

Granny Smith apples are my top choice because of their tartness, but Honeycrisp, Fuji, or even Pink Lady apples work beautifully.

How do I keep the sandwich from getting soggy?

To prevent sogginess, make sure the lettuce and apples are dry before adding them to the sandwich. You can also lightly toast the bread to create a barrier against moisture.

Can I use gluten-free bread?

Absolutely! Just swap the artisan bread for your favorite gluten-free option. There are so many delicious and sturdy gluten-free breads available now that work perfectly for this sandwich.

Storing Turkey Brie Sandwiches

This sandwich is best made the day of and enjoyed within the day. It is not the best sandwich to make ahead. If you want to make it ahead of time, prepare all the ingredients and have them ready to assemble when it is ready to serve.

More Delicious Sandwiches

If you’re a sandwich lover, don’t stop here! Try some of my other favorites like a classic BLT, a hearty Italian sub, or a Margherita sandwich with fresh mozzarella and basil. There’s always a new flavor adventure waiting between two slices of bread.

Ingredients

  • 6 inches bakery artisan sandwich bread (we found a French bread type that was wonderful)
  • 3 tablespoons fig butter or fig preserves
  • ¼ pound sliced or shaved deli turkey
  • 2-3 ounces Brie cheese
  • ½ cup spring mix
  • 1 Granny Smith, thinly sliced
  • 2 Tablespoons Dijon mustard

Instructions

  • Slice the bread in half.
Slicing bread in half on a cutting board with a bread knife.
  • On the bottom half of the bread, generously spread the fig butter (as if you were making a PB&J).
Spreading Fig butter on bottom half of the bread with a butter knife on a cutting board.
  • Layer on the turkey.
Placing turkey deli meat on top of fig butter spread.
  • Slice or spread the Brie (this can get tricky, just spread it on as best you can).
Placing slices of brie cheese on top of deli turkey breast.
  • Layer the greens and apples.
Placing sliced green apples on top of greens layer of turkey sandwich.
  • Spread mustard on the top slice of bread and place on top of the sandwich.

Notes

  • Get a good bread. I used French bread, which was wonderful but you could use ciabatta, focaccia, or any kind of bread that looks delicious to you.
  • This recipe calls for fig butter, and you can find it at Trader Joe’s for just a couple of dollars. Fig butter brings life to the sandwich; don’t leave it out! If you don’t have a Trader Joe’s in your area, you can make your own by mixing fig preserves with softened butter or you can just spread a layer of fig preserves on the bread. So yummy!
  • Brie cheese is easy to find at your local grocery store. It can get a little sticky when spreading on the sandwich; you can just use your fingers to get an even layer.
  • The tartness of the Granny Smith apple complements the creaminess of the cheese and just makes the sandwich so good. You won’t use the entire apple – you just want a single layer – so slice up and serve the remaining apple on the side.

  1. This was so delicious! I put it in a panini press. I don’t normally rate recipes I’ve had to change, I don’t think that’s fair, but I wanted to share my substitution. I was out of fig preserve, but I had apricot preserve, it was a great sub in! Apple jelly or red pepper jelly may also be good for those who don’t have fig jambor preserve 🙂

  2. Oh love this so much, I am looking for simple easy health sandwiches as I am always making for charity functions. These are delicious too

  3. How great to still be getting gifts from the gadren. Mine burned up in July. My fig tree, had but one leaf left on it, but after rains, now is covered, though I didn’t get any figs this year. Maybe next year will be better.

  4. I had missed this when you first posted it. I’m SO glad I saw this–the turkey sandwich at Bleubird is my all-time favorite sandwich!! It is amazing! Thanks for the tip about the fig butter. The first time I had the sandwich, someone brought it to me so I hadn’t ordered it. I had to google their menu to figure out everything that was on that sandwich. 🙂 Thanks for the recipe!

  5. Yea! Trader Joe’s has the nice thick turkey slices and the figs for sale. I’m on my way, if I don’t slip on my drool first. This looks so good.

  6. Love turkey sandies……let me introduce you to another way….
Honey turkey thinly sliced, french brie with the mushrooms
running through it…..French crossiants, large size. Red
pepper jelly (homemade) and finally if so desired, cream cheese
lightly flavored with orange honey. I normally do not share
my ‘lab’ results, yes my lab is my kitchen, even in looks. Finally,
for the greens i use arugala, nice sweet peppery flavors.
    enjoy 🙂
