Unicorn Hot Chocolate is all the rage right now. It can be found at a cute coffee shop in California called “Creme & Sugar” but unfortunately that is hundreds of miles from where we live. I knew my girls would go NUTS over it, so I just had to come up with my own Unicorn Hot Chocolate recipe. It is SUPER easy to make. If you want to make it even easier, you can just buy the white hot chocolate mix. I just like homemade better.
Ingredients in Unicorn Hot Chocolate
- White chocolate chips, I like Ghiradelli brand
- Half-and-half
- Milk
- Vanilla extract
- Pink food coloring (or any color to your liking)
- Whipped cream to taste
- Sprinkles for garnish
Cute and delicious
For those of you who know me, you know I have a house FULL of girls. That’s right, no boys (except my poor husband who gets to deal with all the fun girl drama). They are all about rainbows, unicorns, glitter, and sprinkles. They adore all that kind of stuff. So, when I surprised them with this Unicorn Hot Chocolate, you can imagine how their little hearts just about exploded with excitement. They couldn’t dive into the liquid rainbow concoction fast enough. Granted, it took them a good four hours to get down from their sugar high, but it totally made their day.
Warmth to your soul
My girls loved this so much they are already talking about how they want to do a “tea party” with all their friends and serve this stuff. OKAY, I’ll admit it. I was skeptical when I first saw pictures of the unicorn hot chocolate. You never know how a unicorn is going to taste, but I had a cup myself and it was actually really good. I will be honest, I liked mine best without the marshmallows, but the kids loved them. The vanilla hot chocolate was hot and smooth. It warmed me to the core on this FREEZING day here in Boise (really, it is 6-degrees here at this very moment).
This unicorn hot chocolate recipe is just FUN. It is bright, has beautiful colors, and you can’t help but smile when you are drinking it. It makes the most visually beautiful mug of hot chocolate that I’ve seen. If you have little girls (boys too!!), who are into the pink sparkly rainbow stuff, you have got to make this for them. They will flip! This would be perfect for birthday parties too! The kids could each “decorate” their own unicorn hot chocolate. Seriously, so so fun. Give it a try! You know you want to.
Questions About Unicorn Hot Chocolate
We used whipped cream, mini marshmallows, and plenty of rainbow sprinkles to top our hot chocolate. You could use some chocolate syrup, mini sugar pearls, or any other colorful sweets you think will add that touch of unicorn magic to your hot cocoa. I have even seen unicorn marshmallows occasionally at the store which adds a rainbow of colorful marshmallows to this whimsical treat.
I personally prefer to make it fresh on the stove, but you can use any white chocolate flavored hot cocoa mix (I think Swiss Miss has a good one) and it will still make a very delicious drink.
The recipe calls for a medium saucepan but if you want to make a half batch, a small saucepan works great.

I can’t wait to make this with my nieces when they come over on there own separate weekend.
This is such a great recipe, I look forward to making it with the family this holiday.
Your girls look so happy to be drinking this and little wonder – the pink colouring just adds that extra bit of fun for young ladies! So perfect for sleepovers… or in the case of this year, warming up hands as they enjoy an outside only playdate with friends (current UK rules)!
Yummy! This is a such a cute and delicious idea, I know my girls will love this! Can’t wait to try it out 🙂
I used a little less of everything and did 1/2 white chocolate chips, 1/2 dark chocolate and this was sooooo yummy! I even had it cold and it tasted like the perfect chocolate milk. (I didn’t use any of the extras- food coloring, etc).
It would be better in the English metric
I think it probably tastes the same either way 😀
This was such a fun drink to make with our little girls! Came out great!
My girls would love this!! It looks so fun & tasty!
What a fun treat to enjoy on a cold morning! Love this idea.
My girls are going to love this! They are also on the unicorn train and love having fun things for their tea parties! Thanks for sharing.
My daughters felt so magical enjoying this sweet treat! So colorful and delicious; I even had some too!
Looks delicious!!!
hi i was wondering can u use betrout juice for colouring
I’m not sure I am familiar with betrout juice. Can you explain? Did you mean beet juice?
I have three girls myself and they’re going to go crazy for this. It’s going to be perfect since its done nothing but rain rain RAIN for the last week, and we could use a little cheering up tea party. Thanks!
I hear ya! We have had tons of rain too. Can it be summer already? haha
Do you think this recipe would work in a crock pot? Was going to do this for my daughters birthday party but it’s at another location and I can’t labor over it the whole time. Thanks,
Sydney 🙂
Yes, definitely. You could keep it in the crock pot on a low setting so it doesn’t burn or start to boil. Good luck with the party!
Hi please can you tell me what half and half is xx I can’t wait to try this xx
Half and half is half cream and half milk. If you can’t find half and half at the store you can substitute half heavy cream and half milk. Thanks for asking!
I stumbled upon this recipe this morning. It made me chuckle. I live 5 minutes from Creme and Sugar and we are packing today to move to our new home in Boise! Glad I now have a recipe for the cold days.
Oh no way!!! You are going to LOVE Boise! You are probably already in Boise right now and not loving it– this winter is UNHEARD OF! We have never experienced anything like this so don’t judge it on this last week haha the summers here are PERFECT!
What is half n half sorry bit thick
Half and half is a mixture of milk and cream, thus the term “half and half.” If you can’t find it in your local grocery store, you can mix equal parts of milk and heavy cream. Thanks for asking!
That sounds very good, but i am a dark choclate type of person, your other hot chocolate recipes sound good to? Could you send me or email me the other Hot chocolate recipes i would greatly appreciate it!
Hi Judy, here are the links to some more hot chocolate recipes on our site – thanks for asking!

How many cups does this recipe make? It looks super yummy!
Thanks Stacy! It makes about 4 cups of hot chocolate.
Do you think this would still work if made with all milk?
Yes, it just won’t be quite as rich. I would recommend using whole or 2% milk.
